Self-repair in interpretation refers to the interpreter’s spontaneous modification and correction of the translation within the same round of discourse in order to make the interpretation more accurate.Appropriate self-repair can increase the accuracy of the interpretation, while inappropriate self-repair can reduce the quality of the interpretation and cause misunderstandings of the listeners.Either kind of self-repair will inevitably affect the fluency of the interpretation and should be minimized.Based on the mock conference of Urbanization: Global Trends and Issues in China, the thesis makes classification, judgement, calculation and analysis of self-repair cases occurred in the author’s interpretation. The thesis also proposes coping tactics to reduce the number of selfrepairs and improve the quality of the interpretation. After studying the findings of previous researches and introducing the background of the mock conference, the thesis divides self-repairs into three categories according to the repair subjects, including content repair, expression repairs and repetitive repairs. These three kinds of self-repair are further classified as appropriate and inappropriate self-repairs depending on whether the repair is successful or not.Inappropriate self-repairs are mainly found in expression and repetitive repairs according to the data.Through analyzing self-repair cases individually, the author concludes that there are three main reasons causing self-repairs,including influence of the objective factors, negative effect of native language transfer and non-linguistic factors. The author also proposes four coping tactics, including making sufficient preparation for each interpretation, strengthening bilingual skills, improving notetaking system and overcoming psychological barriers. This thesis studies the common problems of self-repair in Chinese-English communication, which can be useful for interpretation practice.
