Self-repair is a common phenomenon in oral communication, and scholars at home and abroad have extended their research on self-repair from natural language to second language and interpretation. When interpreting, the interpreter has to complete bilingual switching in a short period of time and errors or omissions in information and expressions may occur. As for Chinese-Japanese consecutive interpretation,self-repair appears due to the influence of different linguistic expressions such as kanji words and honorifics,as well as cultural differences. While immediate self-repairs can improve the integrity and accuracy of interpretation when the interpreter notices an error or inappropriateness in the current interpretation, frequent and excessive self-repairs affect the fluency of the translation, which is also one of the important criteria in evaluating the quality of interpretation. And ineffective self-repairs can cause redundancy, which will disturb the listeners. Thus it is significant for interpreters to self-repair effectively. This thesis takes the mock conference of the People’s Good Doctor Diabetes Science Forum as an example and refers to prior research to classify the self-repairs in the case into four categories: different information repair, appropriateness repair, error repair and repetitive repair. The author selects typical examples to explore the performance and causes of self-repair.Effective self-repairs are specifically manifested as correcting language errors, correcting wrong or missing information and correcting the accuracy of information, while ineffective self-repairs are specifically manifested as repeatedly correcting the same information, failing to correct or add information, tautologically correcting language which is unnecessary.Combined with the analysis of the causes, the author concludes by suggesting specific ways to self-repair effectively.Firstly,in terms of reducing the frequency of self-repairs,it is important to refine the scope of preparation, focus on subject knowledge and improve the note-taking system in which we should focus on symbols and logic.Secondly,in terms of improving the quality of self-repairs,it is significant to correct errors, avoid repetitive repairs and expand the range of translation options through diverse expression practice.
