Fang Hui(1227-1307)was a famous poet and scholar of the late Song and early Yuan dynasties.Current scholarly research on Fang Hui has focused mainly on his theoretical work on poetry-Ying Kui Lv Sui,and his poetic compositions, but has not paid sufficient attention to the rich allusions to The Book of Changes in his poetry and the academic philosophy that worships Neo-Confucianism and Cheng Zhu.The article therefore uses a combination of documentary evidence and literary interpretation to study the material on The Book of Changes in Fang Hui’s Tongjiang ji and Tongjiang xuji,to sort out and study the selection and citation of allusions of The Book of Changes in Fang Hui’s poetry, and the deep ideological connotations of the poems and writings that quote The Book of Changes. The essay is divided into five parts: The first chapter examines Fang Hui’s life and his writings. The study of his life is based on his reading experience and character, while his writings are examined in the light of the current state of his writings and the three books related to The Book of Changes, namely Du Yi Xi Yi and Yi Zhong Zheng Kao and Xugu Yi Shuo. The second chapter focuses on Fang Hui’s origins in Yi-ology and his contacts with Yi-ologists,making it clear that Fang Hui studied the The Book of Changes with academic thinking and had close academic contacts with Yi-ologists in his contemporaries. The third chapter is based on the intermediary between the content of Fang Hui’s poetry and the allusions to The Book of Changes cited as a basis for classification, and a comprehensive collation of the content of Fang Hui’s poetic quotations from The Book of Changes, which reveals that Fang Hui consciously quoted The Book of Changes in a large and diverse manner in his poetic composition to enrich the ideological connotations of his poetry. The fourth chapter focuses on the ideological connotations of the poetry that quote The Book of Changes, exploring its philosophical ideas of Confucian orthodoxy,Taiji, the concept of changes, human nature, epistemology,as well as the concept of moral cultivation and the attitude of life. The fifth chapter focuses on the collection and collation of Fang Hui’s views on The Book of Changes, with a focus on his one hundred ’Yi Yin’,and an exploration of his texts that explain the meaning of The Book of Changes, identify pronunciations and word meanings, and other issues related to Yi-ology.
