This report summarizes the translation practice of the first two chapters of the first part of Four Thousand Weeks: Time Management for Mortals. This book is the latest work of Oliver Burkeman,a British psychological writer. It is divided into two parts,14 chapters in total,of which the first two chapters are used as materials for this translation practice.Compared with other books advocating efficient use of time, the author of this book has taken a different approach, passing on an “anti-time management” idea that “time can never be enough”,trying to encourage people to change their way of thinking,to make them slow down the pace of life, and thus reduce anxiety. This work is very suitable for young people who are busy today to read, and the introduction of such life inspiration books with unique insights and suggestions is also increasingly in need by the Chinese market,so the translation of such works needs to be paid enough attention.Reiss divides texts into three categories according to their functions: informative text, expressive text, and operative text.In the source text of this translation practice, the author expresses the expectation that readers will maintain a good attitude in the face of limited life, and puts forward corresponding suggestions, expecting readers to act according to his suggestions. With the function of inspiring readers, operative text is dominant in the source text.In order to better realize its function, the translator adopts appropriate translation methods when translating, using “adaptive means” such as annotations, reduplication, onomatopoeia and so on to achieve the calling function of the text.Under the guidance of Reiss’ s theory of text typology, this report strives to provide reference for the translation of books of similar texts.
