| Electrostatic Discharge(ESD)is a common source of hazards in electronic manufacturing industry, which can cause damage to electrostatic discharge sensitive products.Compared with foreign ESD protection and control,China’s ESD protection and control starts late. Therefore, the English to Chinese translation of electronic technology texts related to electrostatic prevention and control is of great significance to the development of electrostatic discharge. The technical report Handbook for the Development of an Electrostatic Discharge Control Program introduces the basic knowledge of electrostatic discharge and electrostatic protection and control program. The report takes the selected chapters of the handbook as the object of analysis and research.Firstly,it introduces the project,as well as the main translation process, including pre-translation preparation, translation and post-translation review.Secondly,it focuses on the difficulties and corresponding translation strategies in the original text. The lexical difficulties are represented by technical words,semi-technical words and abbreviations. The difficulties at syntactic level are embodied in nominalized structures, passive sentences and complex sentences. In view of those difficulties, the author proposes corresponding strategies. For technical words, the author uses different online dictionaries to confirm meanings. For semi-technical words, the author identifies the appropriate meaning within the context. For abbreviations, the author uses strategies of zero translation and literal translation. As for the difficulties at syntactic level, the author changes the part of speech of nominalized structures. In terms of the passive sentences, the author turns the passive sentences into active sentences by retaining original subject or translating original subject to target object. As for the complex sentences, the author adopts the strategies of division and changing orders. Finally, the author reflects on the deficiencies in translation process, hoping to provide some help for translators in the field of electrostatic discharge in the future and enrich the study of electronic technology texts. |
