Taking Shupu Magazine(1974-1990),the first contemporary Chinese calligraphy journal,as the study object, this paper explores the origins and development of the magazine in the 1970 s and 1980 s in Hong Kong, and explores the significance of Shupu’s heritage of traditional Chinese culture in the "mix cultural city" of Hong Kong. With reference to sociological and historical research methods, this paper collects and categorizes literature, analyzes data, and reveals the calligraphy research by Shupu scholars at the time, revealing the significance of Shupu magazine as the foundation of contemporary Chinese calligraphy. This paper mainly explores the calligraphy theory and calligraphy history in the magazine, systematic and scientific theoretical monographs and dictionaries have emerged;the study of technique theory has become popular and popularized;at the same time, the study has taken on a new perspective, with an increasing number of articles on aesthetics and criticism. In terms of historiography, this paper has studied new materials, researchers focus on documentary and historical excavations, publishing and releasing monuments and posters or newly unearthed and newly discovered materials;introducing "comparative research" and "staging research" into the study of calligraphy;beginning to focus on regional calligraphy. In overseas calligraphy research,we also invited foreign scholars from Japan,France and the United States to write articles for the magazine, with a sense of "cultural export".At this time,"Shupu" magazine has been active and in-depth,with questions and debates on the previous definitions, and scholars openly and repeatedly debate on it.The development of calligraphy has also been continued, and gradually "stele calligraphy" has been developed simultaneously. It can be seen that the calligraphy content in Shupu magazine is extremely rich.At the time of the transition between the old and the new, compared with traditional calligraphy researchers, the scholars of Shupu already had independent and scientific calligraphy research, and began to use the emerging calligraphy discipline research methods, leading to the emergence of contemporary calligraphy. The calligraphy scholars cultivated by Shupu magazine and the accumulated calligraphy research results have created a precedent for contemporary Chinese calligraphy.
