Brancusi And Minimalism:The New Syntax Of Sculpture

In the 1960 s,the development of minimalism was dominated by new phenomenological critiques by Rosalynn Kraus and others.Similarly,minimalism sculpture also provides a new grammatical structure,namely,a new language structure.This new grammatical structure breaks off the internal structure of form as the fundamental source of meaning(such as traditional sculpture,modernist sculpture),and instead stores meaning in the public space,achieving a transformation from the inside out.Looking back 40 years,there seems to be a connection between Brancusi’s sculpture and minimalism: repetition,ready-made form,polished appearance,etc.Therefore,this paper makes an analogical study of Brancusi and minimalism.Starting from the exhibition "Brancusi: The Pioneer of American minimalism" at Kasmin Gallery in 2015,this paper analyzes the connection between Brancusi and minimalism in specific works,and illumines the interlacing and overlapping of internal grammar with the help of some documents such as art history and philosophical thoughts.Therefore,from the perspective of post-history,minimalism gives us a new understanding of Brancusi’s sculpture.
