Chinese idioms are an important part of Chinese vocabulary and also the key and difficult points in the teaching of Chinese as other languages.In addition,Chinese idioms have rich Chinese cultural connotation.Chinese idioms teaching is not only language teaching but also culture teaching,which plays an important role in cultivating learners’ communicative language skills and intercultural awareness.In teaching activities,textbooks are the link between teaching and learning.The collection,recurrence,interpretation,practice and other arrangements of idioms in international Chinese textbooks will influence the effect of idioms teaching.Based on this,this paper takes the intermediate level textbooks of New Practical Chinese Reader and Chinese Link as the research objects,analyzes the collection and arrangement of idioms in international Chinese textbooks,summarizes relevant problems and puts forward thoughts.The selection and analysis of textbook idioms.With the help of authoritative idioms dictionaries and manual intervention,the paper analyzes the collection of idioms in two sets of international Chinese textbooks;with the comparisons of Chinese Proficiency Grading Standards for International Chinese Language Education(the Grading Standards,for short)and the frequency of use by native Chinese speakers,the scientific and practicability of the selection of idioms is investigated.It is found that the number of idioms in each lesson of the two sets of textbooks fluctuates greatly and do not match well with the frequency of use by Chinese native speakers.The analysis of the arrangement of idioms in textbooks.Through manual statistics and analysis,this paper analyzes the arrangement of idioms in the two sets of international Chinese textbooks from the aspects of the presentation,recurrence,annotation,and practice.It is found that Chinese Link,an overseas Chinese textbook edited in the United States,has set up a special idioms teaching section;New Practical Chinese Reader is a single-edition-multi-version textbook,integrating idiom teaching into vocabulary teaching and text teaching.In addition,this paper analyzes the reasons for the differences in the collection and arrangement of idioms in the two sets of international Chinese textbooks from the perspectives of attitudes towards idiom teaching,concept of textbook writing,and the background of textbook editors.Based on the above analysis,this paper sorts out the problems existing in the collection and arrangement of idioms in the textbooks from the perspective of the selection,recurrence,interpretation and practice of idioms,and summarizes the problems such as uneven distribution of idioms,low overall repetition of idioms,and inaccurate interpretation of English.Combined with the idiomatic arrangement characteristics of the two sets of textbooks,this paper which puts forward specific suggestions such as developing a syllabus of international Chinese idioms teaching,adding a special attached list of idioms,enriching the presentation methods,and improving the interpretation with examples,hopes to provide reference for the revision of existing textbooks and the preparation of new textbooks.
