Humans have worshipped the sun since the dawn of time, and because of light, scientists have discovered not only its fluctuating properties, but also that light can appear as interference, diffraction and dispersion, and artists have used the nature of light to build unique forms of artistic expression.Central to Mary Corse’s artistic practice is an interest in the subjective experience of light and colour.A member of the Light and Space in the United States,Mary Corse is known for her light boxes and monochrome paintings. This paper begins by analysing Mary Corse’s artistic exploration of space and light, based on a review of existing theory and literature.Relating her artistic output to trends prevalent in the art world at the time, she sheds new light on the prevailing California model of artistic abstraction, connects Mary Corse’s artworks to the emerging technologies of the time, and investigates her artistic practice through these various lenses to generate a rich understanding of her artistic expression and philosophy. The study reveals that despite the artist’s attempt to maintain a contrary approach to the practices of the Light and Space, her work offers a different way of looking at art to the Light and Space in California. And Mary Corse was the first painter to break with the static state of light. Her uniqueness as the first light painter, who did not portray light as a subject but painted with light as a material, has played a crucial role in the history of light painting, and there are few studies of Mary Corse’s art in this country,so my research fills a gap in her artistic research. |
