The contrastive studies of languages have always been a classic hot topic. However, there are few works that systematically present models and frameworks dedicated to linguistic contrasts, although there are many related researchers.Contrastive Functional Analysis is one of the classic linguistic works, written by Andrew Chesterman in 1998,which has not yet been translated into Chinese. This work focuses on contrastive functional analysis as a research model that can be used for syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic contrasts between languages,as well as stylistic and rhetorical contrasts, and so on.Chapter 2 of it mainly clarifies the characteristics, analytical methods and functional description framework of the model. This English-Chinese translation report aims to provide a more complete comparison model of language functions for bilingual researchers and improve translator’s own understanding of linguistic comparison. The text adopted in this translation project belongs to academic text, which involves many disciplines and contains a large number of specialized terms, with frequent passive sentences and long and complicated sentences. This one belongs to the informative text,so its emphasis lies in the information content itself. In view of the characteristics of this text, the translator discuss various problems and solutions in text translation from the lexical, syntactic and textual levels under the guidance of Eugene Nida’s functional equivalence theory. The translator deals with the problem of some technical terms by querying parallel texts in detail;the division of long and complicated sentences and word class conversion are used to clarify complex sentence relationships;the style of the original text is maintained on the basis of the techniques of amplification and omission and division. The purpose is to improve the readability of the text on the basis of maintaining its academic character, and to achieve the effect of functional equivalence. The translation practice shows that, the functional equivalence theory has a positive guiding effect on the translation practice of academic texts, enriching the translation research under this theory and enhancing the further improvement of the translation quality of relevant academic texts.Meanwhile,it also deepens the translator’s understanding of the functional equivalence theory and the specific steps of translation, and effectively improves the translator’s translation literacy and bilingual application ability.
