This paper takes the discourse markers “bu shuo bie de” and “bie de bu shuo” as the research objects, and uses the methods of corpus search and statistical analysis, combination of phenomenological description and explanation, and combination of co-temporal and historical research to compare the two. This paper analyzes the similarities and differences between the two in terms of location distribution, semantic relations between pre and post items,co-occurring components, pragmatic functions and evolutionary process. The thesis is divided into six parts:The first chapter is the introduction, which mainly includes the reason for selecting the topic, the significance of the study, the research overview, the research objectives and methods, and the sources of the corpus, and so on,to sort out the research ideas of the article. The second chapter defines the nature of “bu shuo bie de” / “bie de bu shuo” and determines the objects of this paper as the discourse markers “bu shuo bie de” / “bie de bu shuo”.Secondly,we analyze the discourse patterns of the two,and described the semantic relations of the pre and post items of the two discourse markers in an enumeration to compare the differences. The third chapter investigates the location distribution and co-occurring components of the discourse markers “bu shuo bie de” / “bie de bu shuo” in conversational turn.It is found that both of them can appear at the beginning of the non-first conversational turn and in the middle of the conversational turn.In terms of co-occurrence with other components,“bu shuo bie de” tends to co-occur with other components more than “bie de bu shuo”.The forth chapter analyzes the pragmatic functions of “bu shuo bie de” / “bie de bu shuo” in terms of discourse organization and interpersonal interaction, and summarizes the similarities and differences between them. Both “bu shuo bie de” and “bie de bu shuo”are found to have formal coherence functions in discourse organization, including turn acquisition and turn retention, and content coherence functions, including topic continuation, topic switching, topic opening and topic elimination. Both have the interpersonal interaction function of promoting understanding and increasing trust, marking focus, and expressing attitudes. The difference between the two is that “bie de bu shuo” allows for the insertion of digressions in terms of discourse organization, while“bu shuo bie de” cannot;“bie de bu shuo” allows for frank positions in terms of interpersonal interaction, while “bu shuo bie de” cannot. The fifth chapter analyzes the evolution of “bu shuo bie de” / “bie de bu shuo” from a chronological perspective, and finds they differ in three aspects: time of appearance, origin, and degree of grammaticalization.First,“bu shuo bie de” predates “bie de bu shuo”;secondly,“bu shuo bie de” originates from the predicative element “bu shuo” and is developed from the form “(qie)bu shuo A,que(dan, qie, zhi)shuo B”,while “bie de bu shuo” originates from the predicative component “bu ti”,which was initially similar to the form “an xia bu biao”,and then gradually developed into the discourse marker “bie de bu shuo”;finally,“bie de bu shuo” is more grammaticalized. The six chapter is the conclusion, summarizing the main ideas and pointing out the shortcomings of the paper.
