Explicitation Strategies In Translating Popular Sciencereadings

Translation is a transfer process of message.However,under the influence of different cultural backgrounds,expressions and other factors,there is no doubt that some information might be deviated intranslation,causing obstacles for readers.Explicitation strategies aim to apply the most specific ways of expression and make the translation explicit,so as to make up the deviation to some degree.The reportresearches on the application of explicitation strategies in translating WhyZebras Don't Get Ulcers into Chinese,which is a popular science reading of Robert Morris Sapolsky,a biology professor.Many allusions with cultural backgrounds,as well as professional terms of medical science and physiology are used in the original text.The author applies explicitation strategies to make the translation more explicit,which are quite helpful for readers to accept and understand.Referring to the English-Chinese translation practice,the author summarizes five commonexplicitation strategies:expressing the implicit information directly,adding annotation,adding cohesive markers,expressing abstract meanings according to the context and adjusting the sentence structure.The author introduces each strategy in detail and analyzes reasons for applicationand effects,finding that explicitation strategies can make the translation more specific and intuitive,as well as achieve the purpose of "liberal education" in popular science readings.Finally,the author proposes some problems that need to be careful with the application of "proper explicitation".
