Can The Belt And Road Initiative Increase My Country's International Support

In September and October 2013,President Xi Jinping first proposed the idea of “ The Belt and Road” regional cooperation when he visited Kazakhstan and Indonesia.“The Belt and Road” adheres to the principle of peaceful development and aims to create a new type of economic cooperation between countries along the line.Since The Belt and Road Initiative was proposed,it has gone through a long and complicated process from the initial wait-and-see question of various countries to the current active participation.Against the background of the current tension between China and the United States,whether the proposal and promotion of "The Belt and Road" initiative has won the real recognition and support of most partner countries,whether it has improved the positive image of China on the world stage,and whether it has improved international presence of China has research value.Based on Hirschman’s theory,electoral theory and geopolitical theory,this paper proposes a research hypothesis: the proposal of the "The Belt and Road" initiative can improve my country’s international support.In order to study this hypothesis,this paper uses the voting data of the United Nations General Assembly to measure the international support,selects the panel data of 105 countries from 2000 to 2016,and uses the DID model to do regression analysis to reach a positive conclusion.Secondly,this paper uses the PSM-DID model,the placebo test under random sampling,etc.to test the robustness of this result,and uses the the method of grouping regression to analyze the heterogeneity from the perspectives of institutional distance and degree of democracy.The effect of this policy is more prominent for countries with higher institutional distance and lower democratic degree gap.Finally,this paper uses the mediation variable to get the mechanism of the policy’s impact,and finds that the policy is indeed to improve the international support of my country by improving the national economic level.Based on the above results,this paper makes a certain summary,and raise some suggestions on the development of my country’s "The Belt and Road" : inclusively attract more countries to join the "The Belt and Road" initiative;Diplomatic visits and communications to consolidate diplomatic relations with countries that cooperate with the "The Belt and Road";strengthen the deployment of the "The Belt and Road" policy,and create a good environment for economic cooperation and trade.
