In March 2011,massive anti-government demonstrations in Syria eventually turned into the Syrian crisis. The Arab League,as a regional organization with the goal of safeguarding Arab interests, took the initiative to intervene in the mediation of the Syrian crisis.Since the outbreak of the Syrian crisis in 2011,the relationship between Syria and the Arab League has undergone changes from cooperation to conflict and then to cooperation. From 2011 to 2017,Syria and the Arab League have experienced a transition from cooperation to conflict. At the early stage of the Syrian crisis in 2011,the Arab League was concerned about Syria and took the initiative to intervene, trying to coordinate between the Syrian government and the Syrian opposition in the hope of resolving this crisis under the framework of the Arab League. After the lack of success in reconciliation, the League became disillusioned with the Syrian government and turned to support the Syrian opposition. The deterioration of relations between Syria and the Arab League was mainly caused by the League’s unjust position on Syria, the obstruction of influential Saudi Arabia and Qatar in the Arab League, and the strong intervention of anti-Syrian regional powers and world powers. From 2018 to 2022,the relations between Syria and the Arab League went through a recovery process from conflict to cooperation. At the beginning of 2018,there were still conflicts between Syria and the member states of the Arab League, and many of them were in a state of severance. At the end of 2018,as the Syrian government forces dominated the battlefield and the Bashar regime consolidated, some Arab League member states took the initiative to show goodwill to the Syrian government, improve their relations with Syria and call for Syria’s return to the Arab League. The warming of relations between Syria and the Arab League has benefited from the stabilization and consolidation of the Assad regime with the support of Syria’s Allies, the U.S.strategic retreat from the Middle East, and the transformation of Arab countries’ development policies. At present, the relations between Syria and the Arab League are generally positive. The Saudi-Iranian rapprochement removes the biggest obstacle to Syria’s return to the Arab League. The warming of relations between Syria and the Arab League also shows that great power diplomacy with Chinese characteristics is playing a positive role.China has begun to actively participate in the resolution of Middle East issues, and its Middle East policy is gradually gaining the recognition of Middle Eastern countries, and its political influence in the Middle East has increased significantly. In the context of the continued withdrawal of the United States from the Middle East and the general pursuit of strategic autonomy and reconciliation among Middle Eastern countries,Syria was finally able to return to the Arab League.Through the transformation process of the relationship between Syria and the Arab League from deterioration to recovery,it can be found that the relationship between Syria and the Arab League is essentially a miniature of the relationship between Syria and the Arab powers leading the Arab League, and it is also affected by external powers. In addition,we can also see the objective reality that the current Arab League is dominated by Saudi Arabia.Saudi Arabia has played a key role in the deterioration and warming of relations between Syria and the Arab League,as well as the development process after returning to the Arab League. What’s more, the rapid change in the relationship between Syria and the Arab League can also see some problems existing in the current Arab League. The power of the League of Arab States is dominated by regional powers and influenced by member states with unfair positions, which leads to decision-making mistakes of the League and the decline of regional influence. Moreover, the lack of collective defense makes it difficult for the Arab League to participate in regional conflict management today.
