The report of the 20 th Party Congress pointed out that enriching people’s spiritual world is the essential requirement of Chinese-style modernization. The completion of a moderately prosperous society on all fronts has laid a solid material foundation for the country’s modernization, but the development of human modernization has shown an incongruous state.People often neglect the enrichment of the spiritual world in the pursuit of material affluence, and the contradictions of people’s spiritual life are becoming more and more prominent. Therefore,it is necessary to return to the original context of Marx’s thoughts on spiritual life, and scientifically understand and expound the spiritual life of human beings.Based on the position of historical materialism, this paper uses the methods of logic and historical unity, documentary analysis, and theoretical and practical methods to sort out and expound Marx’s ideas on spiritual life.In the first chapter, the historical background and needs of the times of Marx’s thought on spiritual life are analyzed from three aspects: social background, class basis and ideological origin, and it is clarified that the thought was formed on the basis of examining and reflecting on the real life of human beings, and the examination of spiritual life has always been a part of Marx’s exploration of the laws of human social development. In the second chapter,we return to the classic works such as the Doctoral Thesis, the Introduction to the Critique of Hegel’s Philosophy of Law,the 1844 Economic and Philosophical Manuscripts, the Holy Family, the Outline on Feuerbach, the German Ideology, the Communist Manifesto, the Preface to the Critique of Political Economy,Capital, the Critique of the Gotha Programme, etc.,and sort out the historical lineage of Marx’s thoughts on spiritual life, pointing out that the formation of this thought is a dynamic development from abstraction to reality, exploration to deepening.Chapter 3,taking Marx’s understanding of spiritual life in the period of historical materialism as the object of study, starts from the dialectical relationship between spiritual life and material life, expounds the logical content of the thought on spiritual life, and summarizes the distinctive features of the thought on spiritual life based on material practice that are different from the previous ones.In the fourth chapter, the important role of Marx’s ideas on spiritual life in Chinese-style modernisation is explored in the light of new times and new problems, and the value of the ideas of the times is shown from both theoretical and practical perspectives.By analyzing the formation and development of Marx’s ideas on spiritual life, the article argues that human spiritual life is a dynamic process from need to satisfaction, starting with spiritual needs, and through spiritual production and spiritual interaction, influencing people themselves and the outside world, constantly developing toward the value goal of achieving spiritual liberation. Therefore, the new journey should adhere to Marx’s thoughts on spiritual life as a guide, find the right direction for the modernization of human spiritual life in Chinese-style modernization, and promote the coordinated development of material life and spiritual life.A full study of Marx’s thoughts on the spiritual life is of great significance in dealing with the contradictions of modernized spiritual life, promoting people’s spiritual affluence and advancing the construction of Chinese-style modernization.
