Marx and Engels’ ideas on community profoundly reveal the laws of the change of community forms at different stages of human society, and are an indispensable part of Marx and Engels’ treasury of thought, and also play a crucial role in the whole process of the formation and development of his materialistic view of history. The German Ideology(hereinafter referred to as the German Ideology),as the foundational work in the formation of Marx and Engels’ materialistic view of history, covers a large number of communitarian ideas.Although Marx and Engels do not give a separate and complete discussion on the idea of community in the German Ideology, their views on community are scattered throughout the book.Studying the idea of community and its value in the German Ideology is of the great theoretical value for understanding Marx and Engels’ materialistic view of history and exploring the laws of human social development, and it is also of great practical significance for guiding the joint development of China and all humankind in the world. In the German Ideology,Marx and Engels profoundly explained the community forms and their evolution laws under different ownership systems from the perspectives of the division of labour and productive forces, and the formation of the community ideas in the German Ideology is also the result of the joint action of many factors. Therefore,in order to sort out the community thought in the German Ideology and the value of its production, the prerequisite is to accurately grasp the background of its community thought and its theoretical origins so as to see the scientific nature of the production of Marx and Engels’ community thought in the German Ideology,so the first part of this study focuses on the context and theoretical sources of its emergence, revealing the background of the emergence of Marx and Engels’ idea of community in the German Ideology. It goes without saying that the content of the form of the community revealed by Marx and Engels in the German Ideology is the main task of this study. In the German Ideology,Marx and Engels reveal the "naturally formed community," the "illusory community," and the "true community," and this study will focus on systematically sorting out these three forms of community in the second, third and fourth chapters, analyzing the reasons of their creation from the perspectives of the division of labour and productivity, revealing their specific forms of expression, summarizing their characteristics, and on this basis focus on analyzing the significance of the three types of community for human survival and development. And by revealing the historical limitations of the "naturally formed community" and the "illusory community",introducing the most suitable form of community for human survival and development, that is,the "true community",and indicating the direction for the future development of the community. This study ultimately returns to the task of individual and social development, which is also the point of departure of this study. The study of the idea of community in the German Ideology, the clarification of its conditions and characteristics, and the analysis of its historical limitations are all aimed at summarizing its value and significance, this is what is explored in the last part of this study.By exploring the value and revelation of Marx and Engels’ idea of community in the German Ideology, grasping the laws of community formation and social development, and thus providing references and ideas for the current society and even for the future development of individuals and communities.
