| China is currently in a new stage of urbanization development, and "local urbanization" is one of the path choices for rural transformation and development. In this context, the emergence of new rural communities is the result of spatial restructuring after rural community demolition during the process of urbanization, and it is also a new form of local urbanization. In the construction of homogeneous and standardized new rural communities, the living environment of rural residents has been objectively improved, the efficiency of rural public service supply has been improved, and the urbanization rate has rapidly increased. The new rural communities still face a mismatch between supply and residents’ demand in terms of governance, obstacles in the transition from agriculture to non agriculture, and even some social conflicts. The transformation of community public space functions has led to the development of such new rural communities in difficulties. With the help of rich community construction and governance theories, and through a large number of field research, this study provides "Nantong samples" for optimizing the new rural Community Governance strategy, and also to understand the problems commonly existing in the new rural communities in the coastal areas of eastern China, and explore the path to reconstruct rural publicity based on the transformation of community public space functions. This study selected a new rural community in Nantong City,Jiangsu Province as an academic research field, and used literature review, interview, participatory observation, and questionnaire survey methods to classify the types of public spaces in the community. The functions of community public spaces before and after transformation were compared, and the representative significance and impact of changes in spatial functions on residents’ lives were analyzed using theories such as social capital, spatial governance, and social integration.Nantong’s new rural community public space is divided into physical public space represented by administration, entertainment, production and education, and non physical(virtual)public space represented by new media such as We Chat group and Tiktok. Its functions include discussion, entertainment and interaction, organizing residents, and expanding the social network of residents’ exchanges. The traditional functions of such public spaces have led to the generation of negative impacts such as weak public awareness among community residents, insufficient participation in public activities, and declining public opinion pressure in the community. The emergence of virtual(non physical)public space has re organized community residents, actively participated in Community Governance and brought a variety of entertainment and social means for community residents and other positive impacts.Research suggests that managers of new rural communities can address their negative impacts from dimensions such as activating the production vitality of public spaces, regulating the production space of communities, exploring the spiritual space of communities, and regulating the new functions of virtual spaces in communities. They can use the opportunity of the transformation of community public space functions to promote the reconstruction of the public nature of new rural communities in Nantong. |
