The Establishment And Evolution Of National Identity In Paralympic Games Coverage

Large-scale sports competition is an important place to enhance national cohesion,and also an important means to promote the establishment of national identity.Paralympic Games,as a large international event,its influence is increasing year by year,but also let the Paralympic athletes into people’s vision.The Paralympic Games can not only make people around the world aware of the dignity and capacity of the disabled community,but also play a huge role in building a national identity for disabled athletes,thus facilitating the integration of Paralympic athletes and even the disabled community as a whole into society.Therefore,as the 2022 Winter Paralympic Games in China approach,it is particularly important to understand Paralympic coverage and the development and evolution of Paralympic athletes’ national identity.The UK is the birthplace of the Paralympic Games and a world leader in disability sports.Therefore,this article selects the British mainstream media,The Times,by adopting the combination of historical discourse analysis and corpus linguistics methods,the successive paralympic games reported screening,by the database keyword and semantic collocation,objective,comprehensive investigation in order to the paralympics in different historical stages of the establishment of national identity and evolution,and the deeper social and historical connotation,summed up the British paralympic games reports and the paralympic games,the relationship between the identity of national identity purpose is to provide reference for the internationalization of China’s sports news with draw lessons from.It is found that the UK Paralympic national identity report text has four characteristics of evolution in different historical periods.The first stage is the feature of the news text from the perspective of the disabled.Under the British "welfare state" policy,the report mainly emphasizes the disabled identity and reflects the development of the country through the emphasis on the disabled identity.The second stage is the feature of news text from the perspective of elite disabled athletes.Under the policy of "neoliberalism",the report focuses on the athletic ability of athletes and emphasizes the similarities between disabled athletes and able-bodied athletes.The above two stages of the Paralympic Games on the construction of national identity is mainly to distinguish the role.Third stage is based on humanistic perspective of news text characteristic,under the "third way" policy,focus on personality,background,behind the report shows the whole person,promote the athletes into the society;The fourth stage is characterized by news text from the perspective of socialized disability issues.Under the policy of "humanitarianism",it emphasizes the sociality of disability issues and drives the whole society to reflect on disability.In the latter two stages,the role of the Paralympic Games in the construction of national identity is mainly integration.China is about to host the 2022 Paralympic Winter Games.The report draws on the development rules of the British Paralympic Report,explores the stories behind the Paralympic athletes,and reports the warmth,truth and simplicity,which will help the society to understand the Paralympic athletes and accept them.Thinking about disability from the perspective of society,promoting the construction of infrastructure,encouraging the employment of the disabled,and caring for the mental health of the disabled are conducive to the integration of the disabled with society.Finally,if China’s sports media want to go global and truly realize the internationalization of sports news,it is necessary to learn from the latest research results of international disability issues,update news discourse,understand the development of disability sports in the world,and promote the social integration of the disabled group.
