| At present,China’s social and economic development has entered a new normal, with the economic growth rate slowing down, the economic structure optimizing and upgrading, and the driving force of development turning to innovation.Higher education is the driving force to promote social, economic and cultural development. As high-level talents, postgraduates play an important role in the development of a country or a region, especially in the western regions where development is relatively backward. However,in the course of the expansion of graduate education in the past ten years, many problems have emerged, such as the decline of graduate quality and the difficulty of employment. Therefore, this paper selects Sichuan province, which has a large population, economy and postgraduate education scale in western China,as the research object, and adopts literature research method and regression analysis method to study the matching situation of university postgraduate supply and demand in Sichuan province from the three aspects of scale, quality and structure.Firstly, the supply of postgraduate education in Sichuan Province is measured by indicators such as the number of postgraduate students enrolled, the number of students enrolled, the number of registered postgraduates per 1,000 people, the student-teacher ratio and the regional R&D expenditure, and the demand for postgraduates in the labour market in Sichuan Province is examined by indicators such as the employment rate of postgraduates, the proportion of postgraduates among the employed population and the number of postgraduates per 100 million yuan of GDP.It is found that the following problems exist in the relationship between the supply and demand of postgraduate students in Sichuan Province:(1)the scale of postgraduate student supply has to be further expanded but the growth rate is too fast;(2)the economic benefits achieved by postgraduate education are not high and uneven among cities and states;(3)the structure of postgraduate education does not match with the market demand.Secondly,it takes into account the multiple influencing factors of postgraduate supply and market demand, including the single means of regulation and control by the government, the loose management of postgraduates by universities and the weak demand for employment in the downward market economy. Finally, suggestions are made from the perspective of the content and means of regulation, mainly: regulating the scale of enrollment through scientific measurement, appropriately expanding the volume of doctoral training and the scale of professional degrees;bridging the cultivation systems of academic and professional degrees;strengthening communication with employers to understand the changes in the market demand for talents;highlighting regional characteristics and optimizing the layout of master’s degree programs;establishing a regular monitoring mechanism for the quality of postgraduate education and an early warning mechanism and a database on postgraduate education. The government should establish a regular monitoring mechanism for the quality of postgraduate education and a database related to postgraduate education. |
