| Since the 20 th century, the forces of globalization have been stirring around the world, and the global character of higher education has become increasingly prominent.Mobility as a fundamental feature of globalization, has become the trend of higher education in the world. In the 1990 s,globalization swept through the field of higher education in a more complex and powerful manner. The emergence of virtual mobility programs such as "Distance International Education" and "Internationalization at Home" curriculums has led to the renewal and development of international mobility of college students. The phenomenon of selective immobility,in which students with the ability and resources to be mobile choose not to study abroad actively, has gradually spread and attracted attention. The international immobile group, which was previously regarded as "disadvantaged" and "lacking global competence and mobility literacy" in the "mobility discourse",needs to be re-examined.What is the current situation of selective immobility among college students? What are the factors influencing selective immobility? How is the phenomenon of selective immobility among college students generated? Consistent answers to these questions are important for us to better understand the new situation, new problems and new characteristics of international mobility of students in the technological era.Around the above questions, this study uses questionnaires and qualitative interviews to answer them one by one.The thesis is divided into five chapters, following the research idea of examining the current situation, analyzing the factors, exploring the mechanism, and suggesting countermeasures step by step. The introductory chapter focuses on the origin of the problem of "selective immobility of college students",operational definition and empirical research design;the second chapter takes X university as an example to portray the current situation of selective immobility of college students, discovering its overall overview, basic types and characteristics in terms of gender, region, class and other variables;the third chapter then uses qualitative coding to further reveal the factors influencing selective immobility behavior among college students;the next chapter reveals the intrinsic, extrinsic and conditional mechanisms of selective immobility of college students in the context of the interaction between universities and society, and promotes a deeper understanding of the motivation behind this behavior;and the last chapter presents suggestions and proposals for optimizing the international mobility of college students by subjects. The study found that there are more female students among the selectively immobile students, mostly concentrated in senior undergraduate years, majoring in engineering, and mostly from urban and high-income families;selective immobility was significantly influenced by the sense of "attachment to local place" and "security".Based on students’ willingness to move and their mobility behaviors, college students’ selective immobility could be roughly divided into four types: transient calm-thinking type, persistent calm-thinking type, transient settling for the status quo type, and persistent settling for the status quo type. The analysis revealed that the selective immobility of college students is mainly influenced by domestic attractiveness, foreign repulsion and students’ personal power. The phenomenon of selective immobility of college students was the result of the combination of the external mechanism of insufficient support and potential risks of mobility, the internal mechanism of accumulation of students’ insider advantages and understandings of personal mobility,as well as the mechanism of promotion of school support conditions and the condition of "cascading" of mobility programs. In the future, international mobility of students will continue to be an important and dynamic area.We should re-conceptualize the new connotation of internationalization of education, establish a correct "mobility view" and eliminate mobility prejudice;should enhance support in many aspects and improve students’ mobility experience;should guide students by type and promote them flexibly;should pay attention to family communication and provide students enough care;should improve the quality of "Internationalization at Home" curriculum and cultivate students’ international literacy. |
