The Effcet Of Family Social Class On University Students’ Friends Networks

Institutional reform,resource restructuring,social structure transformation and others led to social stratification.Obvious intergenerational transmission trend in class,decreasing social flow in society,which is not conducive to the communication and integration between different class groups.Social stratification impacts not only individual’s academic achievements,education,career status,mental health,but interpersonal communication."I’ve been working for eighteen years to sit with you and drink coffee" and other hot topics,which reflected the social facts of communication division and class solidiformation between diffrernt classes.Therefore,based on the literature review,this study focused on the social network of college students from different classes,and highlighted the influence of class background.Researches about social class and social network are important in sociology,both focus on structure and position in the society.Social class researches mainly focuse on the structure and position in the society,while social network researches focus on the structure and position in the social relationship networks more.On the basis of previous studies,this study explores the relationship between social class and social network.The main purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of social class on the university students’ network,from the analysis perspective of social class research.Selecting university students’ friend network as the research object,based on the homogeneous principle and prestige assumption from Laumann,this study put forward the main hypotheses of this study.In order to investigate the influence of family social class on the construction and development of students’ friend network,it adopted the longitudinal research method,combing with the ego-centric network perspective and the socio-centric network perspective in social network analysis(SNS).The study selected students from central China as respondents.First,one junior college A in Hunan province,one ordinary university B and one 211 university C in Hubei province were sampled.Then,a complete class was sampled as one unit,17 classes and 590 freshmen were selected toally.There are 5 classes in school A,9 classes in school B and 3 classes in school C,and the number of students ranging from 25 to 40 in each class.The survey was conducted three times.First survey began when it was two and a half months after the fresh students’ admission.After that,the survey was conducted every six months.In this study,students who participated in all three surveys were selected as the analysis objects.After eliminating invalid questionnaires,the effective sample size was 462 people,262 boys and 200 girls.For specific analysis methods,this study adopted ANOVA for repeated measurement analysis to explore the influence.And the mian findings are as follows:(1)Family social class affects the size of same-sex friends network of university students.High-class university students have more same-sex friends;High-class university students have more urban friends and fewer rural friends,while low-class students have fewer urban friends and more rural friends.(2)In their class friend network,it shows the homogeneity,that is,high class university students have more friends from high class and fewer friends from low class,while low class university students have more friends from low class and fewer friends from high class.(3)Family social class has no influence on the university students’ status in their class friend network.Our study found that the interpersonal communication of university students is homogeneous and stratified.University students from different classes are more likely to communicate with people from their own class.This phenomenon is not conducive to the communication between different stratums and impedes the upward flow of individuals from lower family social class especially.School and education are the place and way for social members to flow upward,school managers should be more student-oriented,develop innovative management methods,break down the barriers,and promote the communication and integration of college students from different classes.
