Under the background of globalization,it is increasingly obvious that countries around the world rely on the Olympic Games as a platform to display multi-culture,rebuild national image and enhance national identity.College students are the most active groups on social media platforms and the main force for online participation in the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics,This paper takes social media as the background of The Times and the recently happened major sports event "Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics" as the case study to explore the influence mechanism between Chinese college students’ media participation in the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics and their national identity.Media participation,as the independent variable of this study,is divided into four sub-dimensions:participation intention, participation degree, media use and media consumption intention;national identity,as the dependent variable,is divided into two sub-dimensions:emotional identity and behavioral identity. The key of this study is to clarify whether college students’ media participation on social media platforms during the Winter Olympics has an actual impact on national identity, and to test the relationship between subjects of various variables. In this study,610 valid questionnaires were collected by questionnaire survey, and then SPSS 26 statistical analysis software was used to analyze the data of the collected samples. It is found that the media participation of college students in the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics has a correlation and positive impact on national identity, and the participation intention, participation degree, media use and media consumption intention are all positively correlated with the national identity of college students. The study also found that college students generally have a high degree of media participation in the 2022 Winter Olympic Games, and a considerable number of college students are willing to consume media in order to obtain high-quality information. In addition,in this study, the group’s overall sense of national identity was also at a generally high level. As control variables, gender, whether they are volunteers of the Winter Olympics, whether they have served as student cadres in school, political status, type of university, educational background and professional nature all have significant differences on media participation and national identity, while the variable of social media use time has no significant differences on media participation and national identity of college students. In addition, the hypothesis that emotional identification will have a positive impact on behavioral identification is not valid, and the data conclusion shows that there is only a correlation between the two.
