| With the acceleration of global economic integration, the focus of competition in today’s international society is gradually shifting to the competition for talent. As innovation is at the heart of national strategic development, critical thinking is a prerequisite for innovative thinking, and therefore critical thinking is gradually attracting attention and becoming one of the most talked about topics in international education. However, due to the influence of traditional educational methods, people’s current level of critical thinking is generally not high, which seriously limits the development of creative abilities. It is therefore essential to improve educational teaching methods and to focus on the development of critical thinking in the new generation of students. In this study,we analyse the elements of critical thinking from the perspective of reading essays, investigate the development of students’ critical thinking in various dimensions, and design teaching to enhance students’ "self-confidence,curiosity,cognitive maturity,systematisation,analysis,open-mindedness and truth-seeking".The study aims to improve the quality of teaching critical thinking in the reading of essays.Firstly, based on the literature review, this study found that students’ critical thinking needs to be developed, and that there is a lack of practical teaching designs for developing students’ critical thinking in the reading of argumentative essays.Secondly, after literature review, student interviews and sample prediction, the Student Critical Thinking Inventory was modified according to the California Critical Thinking Disposition Inventory(Chinese version)(CCTDI-CV),and a survey was conducted with senior students of S High School in Shandong Province.227 valid questionnaires were finally obtained.SPSS 26 was used to analyse the development of students’ critical thinking and the teachers’ attention to critical thinking in the current teaching of argumentative essay reading. In addition,in order to maximise the advantages of teaching critical thinking to students,a SWOT analysis was conducted to examine the relevant elements of teaching critical thinking in essay reading, from "inside-out-outside-in" to "outside-in".The SWOT analysis is used to analyse the two cycles of "from outside to inside-from inside to outside",and the strongest strengths and weakest weaknesses of teaching critical thinking to students are identified. Finally, the ADDIE model was used to develop a design for teaching critical thinking. The study found that:firstly, teachers do not know what kind of thinking students need to develop at the senior secondary level and are unable to develop students’ critical thinking purposefully;secondly, teachers pay more attention to basic knowledge than to the development of critical thinking;thirdly, teachers’practice of implementing critical thinking is not systematic and scientific, which makes the development of critical thinking ineffective;fourthly, students’ own basic knowledge is not Fifthly, students are exam-oriented in the learning process and subjectively lack the exercise of critical thinking;sixthly, students have the habit of passive acceptance of thinking. On this basis, according to the principle of building on strengths and avoiding weaknesses, the ADDIE model is used to develop students’ critical thinking in the teaching of reading essays, with a view to improving the relevance and effectiveness of the teaching of reading essays. |
