Online education has become an important part of educational services due to its flexibility, openness, and ability to overcome time and space limitations. However, online education also faces many problems, such as low student participation rates, high dropout rates, and a tendency for students to become disengaged from learning.Gamification, with its advantages in terms of entertainment, interactivity, and challenge, may help address these issues in online education. This article explores the impact of online gamification on student learning motivation, engagement, and academic performance by combining online education with gamification.Firstly, relevant literature on online gamification in both domestic and foreign contexts was reviewed, and the current state of online gamification in education was summarized.Based on gamification theory and the ADDIE model,a framework for designing online gamification in education was constructed to provide guidance for frontline teachers.Secondly,a quasi-experimental research method was adopted to conduct online gamification teaching practice in a junior high school English class in a city, using PowerPoint games and the Quizizz gamified assessment platform.Seventy-four students from two parallel classes were selected as participants. The experimental class used online gamification teaching methods, while the control class used traditional classroom teaching methods. Before the experiment,pre-tests were conducted on both classes’ learning motivation, engagement, and academic performance. After one month of implementation,post-tests were conducted on both classes. The results showed that:(1)Online gamification teaching had a positive effect on students’ learning motivation, especially in reducing lack of motivation and improving intrinsic motivation dimensions such as internalized motivation and intrinsic motivation;(2)Compared with traditional classroom teaching methods, online gamification teaching had a positive impact on improving students’ learning engagement dimension. However, after analyzing the data in depth,it was found that the behavioral engagement increased significantly, but there was no significant difference in emotional and cognitive engagement. The control group’s learning engagement decreased without significant difference. The conclusion was drawn after considering both sides of the data;(3)Online gamification teaching had a significant positive impact on student academic performance.
