Vocational education is an indispensable part of national education, in which vocational students appear to be a forgotten group. Previous studies have paid little attention to vocational students, and much less on their learning motivation and learning investment. Enhancing learning motivation of vocational students, exploring the factors that affect their learning input is an inevitable requirement of improving their academic achievement. This study used questionnaire method, with a sample of 1020 vocational students in Zhejiang Qintian vocational and technical school to investigate their learning motivation, learning engagement, and influence factors. This study is supposed to provide guidance for education of vocational students. Around this goal, we carried out the following two studies:In study one; we make up a learning atmosphere (external environment) questionnaire. According to preliminary interview, factors were categorized into three aspects:family, school and society. Through reliability and validity analysis, the questionnaire (10 topics, internal consistency coefficient 0.75) reached relevant indicators of measurement, and can be used as a research tool.In study two, we use learning climate questionnaire, learning motivation scale and learning engagement questionnaire to explore the relationships between learning motivation, learning engagement,(including their different dimensions), and demographic variables. Also, we consider environment factors as antecedent variables, learning engagement as outcome variable, and learning motivation as a mediator to examine intermediary role of study motivation. The results showed that:(1) in secondary vocational school students’ learning motivation is not strong, and the overall level is low. (2) Learning input levels were significantly correlated with demographic variables. The level of learning engagement in genders, grades, and professionals are significantly different. Specifically, girls are higher than boys. For grades, students learning input goes up with the grade increased. (3) learning environment and learning motivation were significantly negatively correlated; learning motivation and learning investment were positively correlated; A significantly negative correlation was found between earning environment and learning investment. (4) For mediating effect, learning motivation plays a completely intermediary role in the learning environment and learning engagement. Finally, inadequacy and future research directions are discussed. Also, corresponding management suggestions on education and academic development are described.
