In recent years, online communication between teachers and students has been widely concerned by scholars, especially during the epidemic. However, previous studies on online communication between teachers and students have separated emotional expression from emotional perception. But emotional communication is a process of dynamic interaction. On this basis, this study analyzes the influence of emotional symbols in online communication by integrating emotional expression and emotional perception,to understand the emotional impact of teachers’ use of emotional symbols on college students in different social situations, whether students have different emotional perception of different emotional symbols, and which emotional symbols they prefer to choose in the actual social situation. This helps to cultivate harmonious online communication between teachers and students. In study 1,a questionnaire was used to analyze the basic situation of the use of emotional symbols in online communication between university teachers and students and the emotional connotation of emotional symbols produced by teachers. The results show that the use of emotional symbols is more consistent with the real emotions of teachers at that time, and 11 emotional symbols are used more than the general level.Study 2,on the basis of study 1,uses the method of situational experiment to further explore the emotional perception of college students when teachers send emotional symbols(punctuation, emoji)in social situations(social-oriented situation and task-oriented situation). It includes two sub-studies: sub-study 1 to explore the emotional perception of college students to different emotional punctuation sent by teachers. The results show that there is a significant interaction among social situation, punctuation type and emotional intensity, and teachers’ use of punctuation will enhance college students’ emotional perception.Sub-study 2 explores college students’ emotional perception of teachers’ sending emoticons. The results show that social situation and emoticons play a significant role, and teachers’ use of emoticons will enhance college students’ emotional perception. On the basis of study 2,study 3 uses the method of situational experiment to further explore the selective response preference of college students when two kinds of emotional symbols appear at the same time, and to understand the relationship between college students’ emotional perception and choice. It is found that college students will give priority to positive emoticons for reply, followed by emotional punctuation and negative emoticons. The results show that teachers send positive emotional symbols to make students feel that teachers are warm and friendly, and students are willing to give priority to responding to positive emotional symbols sent by teachers, which is a virtuous circle for the communication between teachers and students. The conclusions of this study are as follows:(1)There are 3 kinds of punctuation and 8 kinds of emoticons used by teachers, which are mainly used to express happiness, embarrassment, anger and sadness.(2)The positive emotion perceived by college students in the social-oriented situation is significantly higher than that in the task-oriented situation;no matter in which social situation, compared with the weak emotional symbols and ruthless emotional symbols, when teachers send strong emotional punctuation marks,it will make students feel more negative emotions.(3)College students are more likely to perceive teachers’ positive emotions in social-oriented situations and teachers’ negative emotions in task-oriented situations.(4)College students in both social situations are more likely to perceive positive emoticons.Students will first respond to text messages with positive emoticons, followed by emotional punctuation, and finally negative emoji text messages.
