The potential and level of development are determined by population, which is the impetus for national and regional economic growth. The intensification of population agglomeration to central cities has been continuously strengthened due to the swift decrease of population impediments and the rapid development of intercity transportation.Agglomeration of population can foster the exchange of knowledge and the enhancement of abilities, augment regional human capital, upgrade the property system, and have a lasting effect on regional economic growth. The central urban agglomeration is a region with high population concentration and huge development potential in the central region of China. The central region’s economic development is greatly aided by its significant spatial carrier, which also serves as a bridge between the north and south, connecting the east and west, and furthering the national economic cycle. It has an extremely important strategic position. Therefore, how to give full to make the economic effect of population agglomeration in the central urban agglomeration has certain significance for promoting the rise of the central region theoretically and practically. Thus,it is essential to give it full consideration. This paper researches the central urban agglomeration and explores how population agglomeration affects the regional economic growth.First of all,the paper specifies the relevant conception of population agglomeration and economic development of urban agglomeration, and builds a theoretical framework of which population aggregation affects regional economic development by sorting out literature and data.Subsequently, the study of the present population agglomeration and regional economic progress in the central urban agglomeration is conducted, utilizing pertinent indicators such as population economic geographical concentration index and inconsistency index. The paper, drawing upon the panel data from 58 prefecture-level cities in the central urban agglomeration from 2006 to 2019,structures a panel fixed model,an intermediary effect test model, and a spatial Durbin model, which empirically assesses the impact of population agglomeration in the central urban agglomeration on regional economic development, the path of action, and the spatial spillover effect.,and structures. This paper principal findings are as follows: Firstly, the population concentration of the central city is noteworthy, and the population size of the core cities and big cities is steadily augmenting. The population and economic agglomeration of the three urban agglomerations are markedly disparate. In the middle reaches of the Yangtze River and Central plains urban agglomeration boast a considerable population and economic concentration In the Central urban agglomeration of Shanxi, the economic growth of the major urban centers is comparatively meager.Secondly, the urban agglomeration of the middle reaches of the Yangtze River and the Central Plains, with its population, can significantly advance regional economic development, the greater the population agglomeration is,the more evident the role of urban agglomeration in promoting economic growth is.The urban agglomeration in the central part of Shanxi, with its limited population, has not yet been seen to have a significant effect on the economy of the agglomeration. The economic growth of urban agglomeration can be altered by altering the industrial structure and augmenting the human capital level. The population agglomeration scale of the central urban agglomeration is positively impacted by its spatial structure, resulting in a higher economic development level. The Central Plains urban agglomeration’s population agglomeration scale and the central Shanxi urban agglomeration’s economic effect not only affects the local area, but also can enhance the economic growth of its neighboring regions. The economic repercussions of the urban agglomeration in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, despite its population growth, are impeding the economic progress of the adjacent regions. The innovation of this paper is as follows:First of all, combining the economic effects of agglomeration,a theoretical framework of the effect of population agglomeration on the economic growth of urban agglomeration is formulated, which the article asserts that population agglomeration can foster economic growth in urban agglomeration by enhancing industrial structure and human capital.Exploring the factors that impede economic development in the three major urban agglomerations of the central region of China, the paper should contrast them to identify similarities and differences.Additionally, the policy advice should be provided to enhance the economic growth of these urban agglomerations.Lastly, the paper put the spatial correlation between cities into the research framework, proposing a spatial spillover effect of population agglomeration on the economic development of the central urban agglomeration, which the Durbin model is employed to authenticate the economic spillover effect of population agglomeration in the same area.
