| With the in-depth promotion of curriculum reform and quality education, language core literacy has become the cultivation goal of language curriculum teaching in primary and secondary schools. As a supplement and extension of the language curriculum, language homework not only plays an important role in consolidating basic language knowledge, but also is an important way to cultivate students’ core language literacy.Under the "double reduction" policy issued by the Ministry of Education, written assignments for grades 3-6 are strictly required to take no more than 60 minutes to complete. However, the unit assignments in upper elementary school nowadays show more basic knowledge and less language practice, more written assignments and less integrated application, more limited assignments and less independent choices, which are contrary to the policy of double reduction and the concept of language core literacy and cannot play a good role in integrating the unit assignments systematically and improving quality and reducing the burden. Therefore, based on multiple intelligences theory and holistic teaching theory, the researcher analyzes and describes the current situation, problems and causes of unit assignments in upper elementary school, and then proposes optimization strategies to ensure that upper elementary school students can improve their language core literacy by completing more scientific language unit assignments.First, this study provides a theoretical analysis of unit assignment design and language core literacy, and elaborates on the theoretical basis of upper elementary unit assignments based on language core literacy, respectively. The researcher argues that teachers should reduce students’ classroom workload by designing efficient and scientific unit assignments, and should also focus on developing students’ intrinsic qualities in upper elementary school.Second, this study used literature, text analysis, and interview methods to grasp the research dynamics by reviewing the literature related to elementary school language unit assignment design and language core literacy, analyzing a total of 97 upper-level language unit assignments in four elementary school in Chongqing, and understanding the current situation of upper-level elementary school language unit assignment design in terms of unit assignment design goals, content, types, and evaluation.Interviews were conducted with eight language teachers who had participated in the design of the upper-level unit assignments in the four elementary school, aiming to find out the problems and reasons behind the design of the upper-level unit assignments in elementary school. This study focuses on four aspects of unit assignment design: objectives, content, types, and evaluation,to understand the current situation of unit assignment design in upper elementary school.Through the analysis of the current situation, the following problems were found: the goal design does not highlight the core language literacy;the content design is knowledge-based rather than literacy-based;the type design lacks the cultivation of higher-order thinking;and the evaluation design is less diversified. Therefore, the researcher investigated the causes of the problems and found that they were mainly caused by teachers’ lack of in-depth knowledge of language core literacy theories, their own inadequate unit assignment design skills, and the lack of institutional construction related to assignment design in schools. Finally, based on the analysis of the problems and causes, the following optimization strategies are proposed: first, systematically design the unit assignment objectives by keeping in mind the overall characteristics;second, clearly design the unit assignment contents based on core literacy;third, cultivate higher-order thinking and design the unit assignment types in a hierarchical manner;fourth, improve the evaluation mechanism and implement multiple evaluations of unit assignments.Through the above optimization strategies,we hope to improve the current situation of unit assignment design in upper elementary schools and give full play to the role of unit assignment design to enhance students’ core language literacy. |
