A Comparative Study On The Effects Of Two Different Intensities Of Exercise On The Cognitive Function Of College Students

Abstract/Summary:
Research Purpose: This thesis explores the effects of high-intensity interval training and dance training as two different training methods on college students’ cognitive function,providing theoretical support for the improvement of college students’ cognitive function through exercise and further enriching the brain-invigorating prescription through exercise.Research Method:College students were recruited and screened by inclusion criteria with 47 subjects(23 in HIIT group and 24 in dance training group)finally selected for a 6-week exercise intervention,which lasted 50 minutes each time,3 times a week.Long-term memory test,adolescent attention test and trail making test(TMT)were used to measure the memory,attention and executive function of college students before,after,1 month after and 3 months after the intervention.This thesis applies SPSS22.0 software to process the data,uses paired sample T-test to analyze intra-group data,and employs independent sample T-test and repeated measures ANOVA to analyze inter-group data.P<0.05 was considered statistically significant.Results:(1)The effects of HIIT on cognitive function: Long-term memory: After 6 weeks of exercise intervention,and at follow-up visits 1month and 3 months after the intervention,the test scores of long-term memory of HIIT group were significantly higher than those before the intervention(P<0.01);Attention: after 6 weeks of exercise intervention and at follow-up visits 1 month and 3 months after the intervention,the test scores of attention’s distribution,span,stability and diversion of HIIT group were significantly higher than those before the intervention(P<0.05).Executive function: after 6 weeks of exercise intervention and at follow-up visits 1 month and 3 months after the intervention,the TMT-A and TMT-B reaction time of HIIT group were significantly shorter than those before the intervention(P<0.01).(2)The effects of dance training on cognitive function: Long-term memory: after 6 weeks of exercise intervention,the scores of long-term memory of dance training group were significantly higher than those before the intervention(P<0.05),but at 1 month and 3 months after the intervention,the scores of long-term memory of dance training group returned to the original level(P>0.05).Attention: after 6 weeks of exercise intervention and at follow-up visits 1 month and 3 months after the intervention,the test scores of attention’s distribution,span,stability and diversion of dance training group were significantly higher than those before the intervention(P<0.05).Executive function: after 6 weeks of exercise intervention and at follow-up visits 1 month and 3 months after the intervention,the TMT-B response time of dance training group was significantly shorter than that before the intervention(P<0.05),but the TMT-A response time showed little difference(P>0.05).(3)Comparison of the effects of HIIT and dance training on cognitive function: Long-term memory: no statistic difference was seen in both HIIT group and dance training group in the long-term memory tests like post-test,1 month and 3 months after the intervention tests(P>0.05).Attention: there was no statistic difference for both HIIT group and dance training group in terms of attention’s distribution,span and stability at post-test,1 month and 3 months after the intervention tests(P>0.05).However,as for attention’s diversion,statistic difference didn’t occur at posttest(P>0.05)but appeared at 1month and 3 months after the intervention tests(P<0.05).Executive function: there were statistic differences for both HIIT group and dance training group in TMT-A response time tests like post-test,1 month and 3months after the intervention tests(P<0.05).However,as for TMT-B response time tests,there were statistic differences between the two groups at post-test and 1 month after the intervention test(P<0.05),but showed no statistic difference at 3 months after the intervention test(P>0.05).Research Conclusions:(1)HIIT can effectively improve long-term memory,attention and executive function of college students.(2)Dance training can improve the long-term memory and attention of college students.However,as for executive function,dance training is only beneficial for processing speed and cognitive flexibility,but presents no improvement on visuospatial ability and writing speed of college students.(3)Comparison of the effects of HIIT and dance training on cognitive function:Long-term memory: two different training methods can effectively improve the long-term memory of college students,but the performance of HIIT group is better than that of dance training group;Attention: the two different training methods can effectively improve attention’s distribution,span,stability and diversion of college students,but in terms of the improvement of diversion,dance training group performs better;Executive function: the two different training methods can effectively improve the executive function of college students,but in terms of processing speed and cognitive flexibility,HIIT group has the advantage.
