| As an important indicator of human capital and an important path to break through social stratification, the problem of unbalanced access to education has been widely concerned by all sectors of society. With the development of higher education in China, although the enrollment rate of higher education is increasing, the imbalance of higher education is still reflected in various aspects, including the problems of class, urban and rural areas, and the quality of higher education, which has also led to the emergence of the saying that:it is difficult to produce noble children from poor families. Therefore, this paper focuses on whether family background has a significant effect on access to higher education, and analyzes the characteristics of this effect, the relative degree of the effect, and the path of family background on access to higher education. This paper adopts the data of the 2018 China Labor Force Dynamics Survey and analyzes the results using logistic regression and ordered logistic regression, and uses heterogeneity analysis and cumulative advantage theory to conduct a more in-depth study of the results, which show that:(1)Among family backgrounds, there is a significant positive effect of family capital on both higher education access and higher education access quality, while urban and rural backgrounds only have a significant effect on significant effect on higher education access quality and insignificant effect on higher education access opportunity, indicating that with the expansion of higher education in China, rural students access to higher education has been balanced to a certain extent, but rural students are still at a significant disadvantage in terms of access to high-quality higher education opportunities.(2)The heterogeneity analysis reveals that there is a significant urban-rural difference in access to higher education among the post-80 s,and this difference is no longer significant among the 90s;the influence of family capital on the quality of access to higher education differs in the east, middle and west of China, and its influence gradually increases from east to west, and there is a significant urban-rural difference in this influence in the central part of China.(3)The influence of family background on access to higher education is greater than the influence of individual effort on access to higher education.(4)There is a mediating effect of school quality in junior and senior high schools between family background and higher education access,in which there is a partial mediating effect between family capital and higher education access and a full mediating effect between urban and rural background and higher education access quality. To sum up,in the context of the persistence of urban-rural dual structure and the universalization of higher education,in order to achieve the comprehensive and equalization of higher education development, reduce the differences between urban and rural higher education, and promote educational equity and harmonious and stable development of society, this paper proposes the following suggestions:(1)efforts should be made to weaken the influence of family background in the competition of higher education, and various measures should be taken to cut off the intergenerational transmission of poverty.(2)Balance not only higher education resources, but also continuously promote the equity of junior and senior high school education resources.(3)Efforts should be made to narrow the gap in educational resources between urban and rural areas and between regions. |
