The rise of social media has met the social needs of users to further showcase themselves and get to know others.Users post images, videos, and other information related to their appearance on social media, and social media has also used their discourse power to ignite a new aesthetic trend.Social media platforms in various fields vigorously promote "standard" looks and "perfect" bodies that do not conform to common sense.Social media not only brings convenience to users, but also makes it easier for them to feel the gap between their ideals and reality. Some people may feel anxious about their appearance due to long-term browsing of social media websites, and even adopt high-cost behaviors such as plastic surgery to narrow the gap with others.Today’s social media software, mainly WeChat,Weibo,Tiktok and Xiaohongshu, makes everyone become a communicator. As loyal users of social media, female college students are of great significance to the study of female college students’ "appearance anxiety" under the influence of social media. This study uses empirical research methods to analyze the causes of "appearance anxiety" among female college students in the social media environment, and proposes corresponding strategies. In the era of social media, platforms promote the"standard beauty" shaped by consumption in order to gain traffic and benefits, causing female college students to have false needs and meaningless anxiety in terms of aesthetics.Social media,as a tool, also has two sides. In social media, female college students can spread any information, including anxiety, and negative emotions are often more easily spread than positive emotions. At the same time, the algorithm technology in social media is not absolutely objective. In order to obtain more economic benefits, information that can easily cause anxiety about the appearance of female college students is often pushed. The commonality of social media platforms allows female college students to blindly pursue traffic on the platform, which can easily deceive them and cause them to blindly follow the content on the platform, causing harm to their physical and mental health. This study aims to help female college students have a correct understanding of appearance anxiety, establish a correct aesthetic perspective, recognize which content and behaviors on social media cause appearance anxiety, and propose targeted strategies to guide female college students to grow healthy in the social media environment.
