Christopher Day is a well-known scholar in the field of teacher education in the UK and occupies a pivotal position in the field of international teacher education research.In the past40 years,Christopher Day has written more than 20 academic monographs,published nearly200 papers,and participated in a number of large-scale research projects with international influence.Taking the practice of education and teaching as the starting point,he comprehensively penetrated into the real life of teachers,combined with solid educational theoretical knowledge,discussed many major themes in the field of teacher education research,and formed a unique ideological system of teacher education.A comprehensive and systematic analysis of Christopher Day’s ideas on teacher education can promote the development of teacher education research in China,draw regular experience that can be referenced,and explore practical and effective ways to implement teacher education.First,I outline the background to the formation of Christopher Day’s ideas for teacher education.Affected by standardized performance appraisals,teachers in the UK have an overburdened workload,resulting in stagnant professional development of teachers.As a teacher educator,Christopher Day pays great attention to the problem of teacher burnout,and proposes that the improvement of teachers’ professional character should be as concerned in the field of teacher education as the cultivation of teaching knowledge and skills.Second,analyze Christopher Day’s thoughts on continuing professional development for teachers.Christopher Day emphasized that teacher training is not a one-time process,no matter from the perspective of their own development,social needs and students’ needs,teachers must learn for life and continuously improve their professional skills.He divided the professional life of teachers into six stages according to their years of practice,analyzed the characteristics and influencing factors of teachers’ professional life at each stage,and explained how to support the professional development of teachers at each stage.Third,elaborate Christopher Day’s vision of teacher resilience.Christopher Day focuses on the professional pressure faced by teachers and the general burnout of teachers under pressure,introduces the concept of teacher resilience into the field of teacher education,explains the relationship between teacher resilience and teacher happiness,analyzes the factors affecting teacher resilience,and explains the support and cultivation of teacher resilience from four aspects.Finally,explore Christopher Day’s philosophy of teacher education regarding teacher passion.Christopher Day proposed that enthusiasm is an intrinsic emotional force that helps teachers establish educational beliefs and keep professional commitments,and builds a theoretical model of enthusiastic teachers,specifically analyzes the impact of teachers’ enthusiasm on teachers’ professional ethics,and details five ways to maintain teachers’ enthusiasm.Christopher Day’s ideas on teacher education contain a critique of the current situation of teacher education and embody the humanistic spirit of teacher-centeredness.According to the current situation of teacher education research in China,we can learn from the research results of Christopher Day to build a phased lifelong learning support system for teachers,cultivate teachers’ resilience to cope with teacher burnout,and comprehensively improve the professional character of teachers in China.
