Geographical Learning Motivation is a prerequisite for promoting students’ diversified development and increasing their interest in geography learning, and an important way to enhance students’ geography learning ability and adaptability. The General High School Geography Curriculum Standards(2017 Edition 2020 Revision)emphasizes that students’ individualized and diversified development needs should be the starting point, and learning activities that can motivate students to learn geography should be integrated throughout the whole process of school education, thus guiding students to learn to know, think and act in geography learning. The abstractness and complexity of geography knowledge in high school puts high demands on students’ ability of communication and cooperation, their ability of independent development and lifelong learning ability, but their lack of adaptability causes their interest in learning to weaken continuously. It is imperative to explore specific connotation of Geographical Learning Motivation, construct practical motivation strategies, improve the motivation level of high school students’ geography learning. It is a an important condition to help students form the right values, necessary qualities and key abilities.Based on a comprehensive analysis of the background of the study, the progress of domestic and international research, and the definition of core concepts, the study is guided by the theory of nearest development area, hierarchy of needs,self-efficacy,and uses the methods of literature analysis, questionnaire survey, comparative experimental, and interview.Analyze the current situation of high school students’ motivation to learn geography through a questionnaire, and put forward targeted teaching strategies by combining the adaptation of the TARGET model to stimulate Geographical Learning Motivation. The teaching design of "Wind-Formed Landform" and "Transportation and Regional Development" has been selected, and the effectiveness of proposed strategies is comprehensively and systematically evaluated and reflected by the comparative experiment method and interview method. The main findings of study are as follows:First, the results of the survey on current situation of high school students’ motivation to learn geography. In the area of internal motivation are still problems such as single learning style, weak self-management and low motivation to learn, while in the area of external motivation there are still problems such as lack of good geography learning methods, necessary campus geography activities, rich teaching methods and evaluation methods.Second, the TARGET model has good adaptability for motivating high school students to learn geography. The feasibility is reflected in the characteristics of core literacy of geography, the educational and teaching requirements of curriculum reform and physical and mental development rules of high school students;the advantages are reflected in the supportive, accepting and tolerant learning environment that can be provided for students.Third, the TARGET model is applied to the development of teaching strategies for motivating high school students to learn geography. In the area of motivating internal learning, teachers are required to design tasks with life cases and geography hotspots, emphasize students’ self-management when issuing tasks, guide students to choose learning tasks according to their own learning situations, and give students flexible time in the teaching process while advancing the geography teaching process. The area of motivating external learning requires teachers to scientifically design affirmation criteria and set up group activities such as heterogeneity and homogeneity, and the teaching process should focus on enriching evaluation methods and evaluation contents.Fourthly, the teaching design and implementation effect of teaching strategy of motivating high school students to learn geography based on the TARGET model. The teaching design takes "Wind-Formed Landform" and "Transportation and Regional Development" as examples, and introduces the TARGET model motivation strategy on basis of digging deeper into their knowledge content and motivation penetration points, and selects two classes with similar development levels for the experiment. The results of students’ performance analysis show that the TARGET model strategy-assisted teaching is more attractive to students and can improve their interest in learning, and the experimental class’ performance progresses significantly than that of the control class. The results of students’ interviews show that the TARGET model mobilizes students to actively participate in geography classroom thinking and inquiry, and the overall classroom performance of the students in the experimental class was optimized significantly, which has a certain promotion effect on the motivation of high school students to learn geography.
