This study investigates the correlation between the digital economy and employment structure.Firstly,a theoretical analysis is conducted on the mechanism of the digital economy’s impact on the employment structure of various industries.Subsequently,empirical analysis is carried out based on panel data from 31 provinces in China between 2011 and 2019.The empirical results reveal that the digital economy can optimize the employment structure at the industrial level by increasing the proportion of individuals employed in the tertiary industry,and by improving the information quality of various industries such as the computer service industry,leasing and business service industry,scientific research technology service and geological prospecting industry.Moreover,the relationship between the digital economy and employment structure at the industry and industry level has passed the single threshold test when using human capital or the digital economy as the threshold variable,indicating that the development of the digital economy has a nonlinear impact on the employment structure at the industry and industry level,and exhibits a single threshold character.Once human capital crosses the threshold,the digital economy’s role in optimizing the employment structure at the industrial level increases;after the digital economy crosses the threshold,its effect on optimizing the employment structure at the industrial level weakens.Notably,industries such as the information computer service industry,leasing and business service industry,financial industry,scientific research technology service and geological prospecting industry have all strengthened their role in increasing the proportion of employment.Based on the findings,it is suggested that developing the digital economy and human capital is an important approach to promoting the optimization of employment structure and achieving sustainable development.Enhancing capabilities in digital technology,human resource management,and talent cultivation can lead to greater flexibility and efficiency of the labor market,thereby increasing employment opportunities and optimizing the employment structure.Additionally,digital transformation and the cultivation of human capital can also drive innovation and entrepreneurship,enhance corporate competitiveness,and facilitate economic development,ultimately resulting in sustainable economic growth and overall social progress.
