Since the reform and opening up,the advancement of urbanization has promoted the cross-regional mobility of the population, and more and more young people are moving out of the rural areas to work and settle in the cities. With the advent of population aging, elderly parents are no longer the main economic support for their families, and they follow their children to live in the city for factors such as taking care of children and grandchildren, family reunions, and old age. From the familiar rural life to the unfamiliar urban community environment, the huge difference in habits and culture, coupled with negative mentality, misconceptions, and less external support, they seem to be out of place and difficult to integrate into the local community life, and the social interaction problem is the most important and direct challenge they have to face in the process of social integration. After a short period of novelty, the elderly migrants gradually find that their old rural social relationships fade away and new social networks are difficult to establish as they move on,facing a serious social interaction dilemma. The author is very concerned about the social interaction of the elderly who have moved to the countryside and hopes to conduct a practical study through social work methods.Based on the preliminary literature, the author conducted questionnaires,in-depth interviews, and non-contact observations of the elderly people who had moved to the Zhengzhou G community.Based on the collected data, the author presented the current situation of interpersonal interactions of the elderly people who moved with them in six dimensions: social object, mode, content, scope, participation in community activities, and willingness to improve social interaction. After that, the causes of the social interaction problems faced by the migrant elderly were systematically analyzed in four dimensions: individual, family, community, and social environment.Based on the summary of their social needs, the author used Schutz’s interpersonal needs theory, social learning theory, and communication analysis theory as guidance, and selected 11 elderly migrants from the community to apply group work methods and adopt a mutual help learning model to intervene, empower the clients, assist group members to learn social skills, promote mutual help and support among the elderly migrants, and help them get rid of their social difficulties. After evaluating the process and results of the group work,it was found that the group work was feasible and effective in intervening in the social interaction problems of the migrant elderly and that the Schutz Interpersonal Needs Theory,Social Learning Theory, and Communication Analysis Theory were effective in guiding the group work. Finally,we discuss the methods of social work intervention in the social difficulties of elderly migrants, reflect on the shortcomings of this study, and propose some specific and reasonable suggestions from three aspects: government, social work agency support, and cultivation of community volunteer organizations,to better serve the elderly migrants.
