This paper takes the seventh and eighth grade students of Karuo District,Qamdo City,Tibet as an example, and investigates and studies the current situation of the development of algebra thinking among middle school students. After clarifying the concept and external performance of algebraic thinking by consulting a large number of literature,we designed the survey test paper.Considering the particularity of mathematics education in the Krai, this paper first conducted a forecast test, further modified the test paper based on the feedback of the forecast test, and obtained the following conclusions: 1.Algebra thinking is generally poor,excellent;2.It is not statistically different between men and girls;3.Grade 8 students performed better than seventh grade students in algebra deductive reasoning and generalized mathematical thinking, and grade 7students performed better than eighth grade students in basic algebraic operation and symbolic operation, which shows that the accumulation of mathematical knowledge can not effectively improve students’ algebraic thinking level. In addition, this paper also collects and analyzes the problem solving situation in the test and some students’ wrong questions, supplemented by case interviews to get the difficulties of students in developing algebra thinking are roughly: 1.Lack of symbolic operation consciousness;2.poor computing ability;3.lack of induction ability;4.easy to pay attention to the surface and ignore the nature;5.thinking confusion. Finally, this paper puts forward several teaching suggestions based on the above research conclusions.
