Project-based learning is a way of learning in which a variety of knowledge and skills are used to solve challenging problems in real-life situations,to produce diverse learning outcomes through collaboration and inquiry, and to acquire critical thinking and teamwork skills. However, due to the special nature of the language subject,a complete theoretical system has not yet been formed in terms of the construction of project-based learning, the design of teaching activities, and the implementation of operational procedures, and project-based learning based on expository texts is rare. The study attempts to explore this aspect. On the basis of exploring the purpose and significance of the study, the study adopts the literature research method, classroom observation method, case study method and survey research method, analyses the definition of relevant concepts and reviews the relevant literature at home and abroad.Based on this, the study explains the concept of project-based learning in the design of activities for junior high school expository reading from three perspectives: first, the content of teaching materials should be closely integrated with the requirements of the activities;second, cooperative inquiry learning should be promoted in authentic contexts;and scientific evaluation should be implemented in the focus on the application of knowledge;and three principles for the application of project-based learning are proposed: first,it should be based on the problematic context of expository texts;second,it should be based on the language curriculum standards;and third,it should correctly position the roles of teachers and students.Afterwards, the project-based learning process is demonstrated in five aspects: selecting a project, developing a plan, exploring the activity, producing the work and evaluating the activity. In order to expand the practical path of teaching illustrative reading,a relevant case study was implemented using the second unit of the second book of Grade 8 of the Ministry of Education textbook as a blueprint. The results of the study show that project-based learning is conducive to increasing students’ interest in learning, developing their ability to think well, explore actively and solve problems;promoting the formation of students’ language literacy and improving their language expression skills;and promoting the improvement of students’ learning styles and developing their ability to cooperate and investigate. However,in a situation where traditional teaching is dominant,it is not easy to break through the barriers to reform through project-based learning, and it is difficult to be fully embraced in a short period of time.
