Altruistic behavior is often described as an act of selflessness that is completely voluntary and unrequited by the individual,an act that is beneficial to others and society, and an act that is encouraged and in line with social expectations. The altruistic behavior of young people not only affects their own physical and mental health, but also has a bearing on the stability of society and the future of the country. Therefore, investigating the current situation of altruistic behavior among young people and exploring the influencing factors of altruistic behavior are of great theoretical and practical significance to the future growth of young people and the moral education work of schools. The family is an important place for individual growth, and a high level of family functioning can promote the healthy physical and mental development of family members.Previous studies on the relationship between family factors and altruistic behavior have mostly focused on parenting style and family environment, but the mechanism of family function,as a comprehensive variable that covers many family factors and can influence the psychological development of individuals,is still unclear. Therefore, this study explores the mechanisms of family functioning on altruistic behavior using adolescents as subjects. From a positive psychology perspective, this study constructs a chain mediation model based on social learning theory and triadic interaction decision theory to examine the mediating role of perceived social support and life satisfaction in the relationship between family functioning and altruistic behavior. The study used 1100 students from three secondary schools in Henan Province as subjects and administered questionnaires using the Comprehensive Family Functioning Scale, the Subjective Well-being Scale, the Self-statement of Altruistic Behavior Scale and the Appreciative Social Support Scale. The results showed that:(1)Family functioning, perceived social support, life satisfaction and altruistic behavior were significantly and positively related to each other.(2)The regression analysis showed that family functioning was a significant and positive predictor of altruistic behavior.(3)The separate mediating effects of perceived social support and life satisfaction on family functioning and altruistic behavior were significant,as were the chain mediating effects of perceived social support and life satisfaction. Conclusion: Family functioning can be linked to altruistic behavior either directly or through the mediation of perceived social support, life satisfaction, and the chain of both, respectively. This study has examined the mechanisms by which family functioning influence altruistic behavior from the perspective of individual traits and cognition. The findings enrich our understanding of the mechanisms by which family factors influence altruistic behavior and have positive implications for the development of altruistic behavior in adolescent groups.
