In recent years, sports tourism has been flourishing with strong support from national policies. As an emerging health industry, sports tourism not only has an economic role in boosting economic growth and promoting the optimisation and upgrading of industrial structure, but also has a social role in improving national physical fitness and building a healthy China, and it has a very important position in the healthy development of China’s economy and the construction of a strong sports nation. However, the healthy development of sports tourism requires not only scientific and reasonable planning and perfect policy support, but also the support of the people. As important stakeholders, the residents of sports tourism places, grasping the perceptions and wishes of the residents,is a prerequisite for the development and development of sports tourism. This study takes community identity, which reflects the quality of the relationship between residents and the community,as the entry point. The community is the carrier of residents’ lives, and community identity is the emotional connection formed by the interaction between people and the community, which also has a very important impact on the residents’ willingness to support sports tourism.Based on the above background and current situation,it is urgent to explore and study the residents’ perceptions of the impact of sports tourism and the mechanisms that influence the residents’ perceptions on their willingness to support sports tourism development. This study explores the relationship between the perceived impact of sports tourism and the community’s willingness to support the development of sports tourism by constructing a structural equation model of "perceived impact of sports tourism-community identity-willingness to support" from the perspective of residents, with a view to proposing a management basis and suggestions for the long-term healthy development of sports tourism.Based on established scales at home and abroad, this study constructs a scale on the perceived impact of sports tourism, community identity and willingness to support, and after pre-study,the final questionnaire is developed. The formal research selected Shanghai Sheshan International Tourism Resort,Yue Pu Town Moon Lion Play Cool Countryside and Fengxian Bay Tourism District using convenience sampling, and a total of 532 questionnaires were distributed, with a final total of 480 valid questionnaires collected. The questionnaire data were tested for reliability, validation factor analysis, correlation analysis, path coefficients between variables and community identity mediating effects using SPSS26.0 and AMOS26.0 respectively.Through empirical research and hypothesis testing, the following conclusions are drawn:(1)Residents’ positive perceptions of sports tourism are higher than their negative perceptions, with a higher sense of community identity and a more positive willingness to support sports tourism.(2)The positive economic and positive socio-cultural impact perceptions of sports tourism have a significant positive impact on the willingness to support sports tourism, and the negative economic impact perceptions of sports tourism have a significant negative impact on the willingness to support sports tourism.(3)The positive economic, positive socio-cultural and positive environmental impact perceptions of sports tourism have a significant positive impact on community identity, and the negative socio-cultural and negative environmental impact perceptions of sports tourism have a significant negative impact on community identity.(4)The positive influence of community identity on the willingness to support sports tourism is significant.(5)The mediating role of community identity in the influence of positive economic, positive socio-cultural,positive environmental, negative socio-cultural and negative environmental impact perceptions of sports tourism on the willingness to support sports tourism is significant.Through the above investigation and analysis, the following suggestions were made:(1)scientific planning of sports tourism development to protect residents’ reasonable interests;(2)improving the mechanism for sharing the fruits of sports tourism development to enhance residents’ positive influence perceptions;(3)avoiding the negative impacts of sports tourism to improve residents’ willingness to support;(4)coordinating the relationship between residents and communities in sports tourism places to improve residents’ community identity.
