High-quality development is China’s economic and social development theme in the 14th Five-Year Plan and even in a more extended period. In this setting, the cultivation of high-quality workers and skilled personnel has been paid more and more attention.Secondary vocational education is an essential foundation for a vocational education system with Chinese characteristics.Database Application Technology is a vital professional subject for computer majors in secondary vocational specialties. Its teaching methods and effects significantly impact the quality of education and instruction in secondary vocational schools. This study focused on how to design the teaching of Database Application Technology in secondary vocational schools based on backward design and learned helplessness,as well as how to evaluate the teaching effect in practice.Firstly, the classroom teaching situations of Database Application Technology in secondary vocational schools were investigated by classroom observation, questionnaire, and interview. The deficiencies in the current classroom teaching were sorted out, including students who have learned helplessness, their subjective status needs to be fully reflected, and the reliability of evaluation methods needs to be improved and analyzed the feasibility of combining backward design with resolving tactic of learned helplessness to enhance teaching effectiveness.Secondly, the backward design process was refined, and the backward design mode incorporated the resolving tactic of learned helplessness. The teaching design used the Database Application Technology query unit as an example.Teaching objectives were analyzed according to standards and the National Computer Rank Examination syllabus.Target knowledge and skills were sorted out,and the expected understanding and essential questions of query units were designed according to the purpose and strategies of skills.According to the desired results, expressive tasks, scoring rules, and other assessment evidence were intended, and task examples were accomplished.Learning activities were designed and organized based on the basis, and the consistency between desired results, evaluation evidence, and learning activities was verified. Finally, the teaching was conducted in a class of grade two computer majors at a secondary vocational school in Lanzhou,Gansu Province.Classroom performance was through classroom observations, completion of classroom practice exercises, and completion of expressive tasks.A questionnaire was used to obtain students’ emotional disposition toward classroom instruction, their initiative, engagement, and approval in the learning process. The interview was used to get more detailed information about students’ feelings and suggestions about the unit’s teaching. The research results showed that combining backward design and the learned helplessness theory in teaching Database Application Technology in secondary vocational schools was feasible. The backward mode of incorporating the resolving tactic of learned helplessness proposed in this article could alleviate students’ fear of course to a certain extent, improve students’ initiative, engagement, and recognition of learning goals, encourage students to study joyfully and help students integrate discrete skills and knowledge into a whole, thereby enhancing students’ mastery and transfer level of skills.
