| Discussions on gender issues have been particularly active in the public sphere and are also a hot topic of academic research in recent years.In the summer of 2020,a video clip by female stand-up comedian “Yang Li” focusing on gender issues triggered a series of controversies surrounding “gender antagonism”.The phenomenal“Yangli Event” has generated abundant research materials,which not only reflects the sensitivity of society to gender equality,but also reveals the practices of gender discourse in social media.As the infrastructure for the communication in contemporary life,social media has reshaped the public sphere and become an important field of discourse practice in the “Yangli Event”.This study collected user-generated content related to the “Yangli Event” in “Zhihu” the social media and also a Q&A community,and analyzed these texts by means of critical discourse analysis and content analysis,and discussed the“Yangli Event” from textual,discursive,and societal aspect based on Fairclough’s three-dimensional model.In the “Yangli Event”,Zhihu platform carried a large number of negative discourse,and overall showed a strong bias towards misogyny.Social media users have applied various discourse strategies to stigmatize Yang Li’s side,along with feminism,and construct dissident “Others”.The discourse practices of Zhihu users not only set the anti-feminist tone for Zhihu platform by the “order of discourse”,but also continually enriched the genres and sources of discourse utilizing“intertextuality”.The patriarchal ideology has thus intervened in the discourse in the process of meaning making,and has been constantly reproduced in communication activities.This not only resulted in women being in a weak position in the public sphere,but also embedded a gender bias into social media.Multiple factors contributed to the long-lasting “Yangli Event”.Finding a new gender discourse norm has become an urgent agenda in contemporary society. |
