Focusing on the health management of chronic diseases of the elderly is the meaning of the Healthy China Action(2019-2030)and a positive response to the national strategy of population aging.Drama therapy combining drama and therapy has become one of the emerging practice models of social work. This paper combines drama therapy with geriatric social work, focuses on the self-health management of elderly diabetic patients, and uses observation methods, questionnaire survey methods and other methods to go deep into the T community to investigate and practice,to understand the present situation and existing problems of diabetes self-management ability of the elderly in the community. On the basis of in-depth demand analysis, this paper discusses the practical goals of making elderly diabetic patients develop good self-health management behaviors through the intervention of drama therapy.According to the self-management content of elderly diabetic patients mainly involved in the clinical guidelines for the prevention and treatment of type 2 diabetes in China(2022 edition),seven group activities enable patients to spontaneously and actively develop chronic disease management habits from the bottom of their hearts, and improve the self-management ability of elderly diabetic patients in four dimensions: medical management of disease, daily life management, emotional cognitive management and interpersonal social support.A qualitative and quantitative analysis of the effects of group work was conducted by combining individual, group, and community-level process assessments and comparing the scores of the Satisfaction with Group Activities Scale,Fasting Blood Glucose Monitoring Scale, and Self-Management Skills Scale SDSCA for elderly patients with diabetes before and after group work. The results showed that all aspects of the clients’ self-management skills were improved. The study concludes that drama therapy is conducive to enhancing the self-management ability of elderly diabetic patients, providing an effective practical reference for the application of drama therapy to the elderly field and improving the quality of life of elderly chronic patients, and demonstrating the necessity and feasibility of social work intervention in the self-management of elderly diabetic patients.Three reflections and outlooks were proposed based on the study, namely: social workers’ practical skills need to be improved and further experience needs to be accumulated;drama therapy has localization dilemmas and should continue to be explored using theory and practice;social work positioning is not clear and multiple parties should jointly carry out "social work+" services.
