With the promulgation, promotion and deepening of policies related to educational informatization, the deep integration of education, teaching and information technology has been promoted. As an important information technology tool, geographic information technology is an indispensable part of geography. It permeates all aspects of the study and research of geography and makes an important contribution to the computerisation of geography education. The high school geography curriculum standards also clearly state the need to focus on the application and expansion of geographic information technology in the high school geography curriculum. With the development of information technology, the field of Geographic Information Systems(GIS)has also advanced to a new stage.Web GIS has emerged, and various Web GIS platforms have been established and provide GIS services based on the Web.Regional cognitive literacy,an important component of core geography literacy, requires a large number of map resources and real-time updated geographic information in the process of its development. It coincides with the advantages of Web GIS.This paper is guided by cognitive learning theory, constructivist theory, pragmatism theory, contextual learning theory.Firstly,we adopted the literature review method to identify the research background and significance of this paper by reading and sorting out the relevant literature at present and abroad. It also composes that the functions of Web GIS have a strong fit with the cultivation of regional cognition and have a clear research prospect. The research on regional cognition conducted by different scholars from different perspectives has provided theoretical support for the delineation of regional cognitive formation aspects.Secondly, the concept of Web GIS,the main products are outlined and this paper is mapped out with a framework of research ideas.Thirdly, the value of Web GIS in high school geography teaching is explained in terms of the main functions and necessity analysis with the use of case studies and questionnaires.Fourthly,we adopt a conceptual and comparative analysis approach to develop the design of the case of the "Zhengzhou7.20 rainstorm".Finally, the main findings of this paper are summarized, and the shortcomings and prospects of this paper are presented. The application of Web GIS to the identification of geography teaching topics that foster regional cognition.Based on the six scientific questions to be addressed by the subject of geography and the previous literature review, the theme of Web GIS applied to the teaching of geography for the development of regional awareness was identified. It is regional location, regional identity, regional differences and linkages, and regional development. The three main principles of case design are summarised and condensed:appropriateness and rationality of case selection, feasibility of teaching design implementation, and the subjectivity and effectiveness of students’ knowledge acquisition.Four components of case design are identified:(1)An overview of teaching a component of regional cognition;(2)Case overview and functional selection;(3)Specific case design;and(4)Features and Advantages. In this paper,we take "Zhengzhou 7.20 Extraordinary Rainstorm" as the mainline of the case and design four example teaching cases. It covers the regional location of the Central Plains urban agglomeration and summarises the comprehensive characteristics of Henan Province, the natural disaster education embedded in heavy rainstorms, and the urbanization of Zhengzhou. We have combined the corresponding technical routes, teaching operations, tried to make the teaching cases as concrete as possible, and summarized the features and advantages of Web GIS to cultivate regional cognition in high school geography:(1)High frequency of teacher-student interaction and three-dimensional visual manipulation of students to allow them to quickly pinpoint the location of an area;(2)Multiple use of one map, with multiple layers superimposed, which facilitates students to summarize and conclude the characteristics of each geographical element in the region;(3)Wide-ranging and life-like social events which deepen students’ understanding of intra-regional connections and distinctions.(4)Interesting and lively story maps which stimulate students’ interest in learning geography and enhance the attractiveness of the subject;(5)Access to historical and real-time geographical information that helps students perceive the dynamic changes in the development process of the region. In summary,Web GIS can provide a tool to assist in the development of regional cognitive. The Web GISbased geography teaching case focuses more on student initiative in geography learning, and it is superior to traditional geography teaching design. The shortcomings of this paper are that the effectiveness of Web GIS for regional cognitive development is unexplored, and more Web GIS cloud platforms and geoinformation technology tools are waiting to be discovered.
