Purpose:In recent years the mental health burden of universities is deepening and the level of subjective well-being is decreasing, while physical activity has been proven to have an important positive impact on the physical and mental health of individuals, this study aims to investigate the mechanism of the impact of physical activity on subjective well-being of university students and its boundary conditions. Methods:This study contains three sub-studies and one supplementary study.Study 1 examined the relationship between physical activity and subjective well-being,and 244 students completed the study;Study 2 examined the mediating role of subjective perceived health in the relationship between physical activity and subjective well-being,and 248 students completed the study;based on Study 2,Study 3 examined the moderating role of implicit mind-set in this mediating pathway, and 280 students completed the study.A total of 280 university students completed the study;a supplementary study was conducted to further validate the robustness of the study’s mechanism by replacing the variable’s measurement scale, and a total of 332 university students completed the study. In summary, the results found that.Results:(1)Physical activity among university students positively influenced subjective well-being,i.e.the higher the level of physical activity, the greater their perceived subjective well-being.(2)Subjective perceived health partially mediates the relationship between university students’ physical activity and subjective well-being,i.e.the higher the level of physical activity, the higher the level of subjective perceived health of university students, which in turn leads to higher subjective well-being.(3)Implicit mind-set moderates the first stage and direct effects of this mediating pathway.Specifically, implicit mindset moderates the relationship between physical activity and subjective perceived health, with students with a growth mindset having higher levels of physical activity and higher levels of subjective perceived health, and thus higher subjective well-being,compared to those with a fixed mindset. In addition, implicit mindsets also moderated the relationship between physical activity and subjective well-being,with higher levels of physical activity associated with higher levels of subjective well-being among students with a growth mindset compared to those with a fixed mindset. Conclusion:Through three sub-studies and one supplementary study, this study revealed the positive effect of physical activity on subjective well-being among college students, and further explored the mediating role of subjective perceived health and the moderating role of implicit mindset. The findings deepen college students’ understanding of the relationship between physical activity and subjective well-being,and provide an empirical basis for how college physical education can be more effective in the future from the perspective of individual perceptions.
