A Study Of The Influence Of Paternal Socioeconomic Status On The Self-Rated Health Of Offspring | | Posted on:2024-08-08 | Degree:Master | Type:Thesis | | Country:China | Candidate:X T Shang | Full Text:PDF | | GTID:2557307166476134 | Subject:Sociology | | Abstract/Summary: | PDF Full Text Request | | The 19 th National Congress of the Party deployed and implemented the development strategy of "Healthy China" and further pointed out that people’s health is an important symbol of national prosperity and national wealth and strength;the Fifth Plenary Session of the 19 th Central Committee of the Party pointed out that the income level of residents should be raised and the construction of a healthy China should be comprehensively promoted;the 20 th National Congress of the Party proposed in its report that the construction of a healthy China should be promoted and the protection of People’s health is a strategic priority for development.This shows the importance of people’s health to a country and a society.This paper introduces the intergenerational transmission effect into the field of health to explore the role of intergenerational transmission on health status and to verify the extent to which socio-economic status,as a transmission pathway,plays an effect in intergenerational transmission.Using data from the CGSS2018,this study uses respondents’ self-rated health as the dependent variable and dichotomises it with paternal socioeconomic status as the core independent variable,selecting four indicators to measure the independent variable: paternal education,type of workplace,political affiliation and respondents’ self-assessed social class at age 14,and offspring socioeconomic status(i.e.educational attainment and household income)as mediating variables,and age,marital status and ethnicity as control variables for this study based on previous research.This paper uses mainly quantitative research methods,using STATA16 statistical analysis software.Respondents were grouped according to their age,gender and urban/rural household attributes,and a multivariate binary logistic regression model was used for statistical regression analysis.Two models,two inequality indices(i.e.dominance ratio OR and relative inequality index RII)and the KHB decomposition technique were used to explore health inequalities under intergenerational transmission for each group,which also reflects the innovative and research characteristics of this study.This paper finds that there is a significant intergenerational transmission effect between paternal socio-economic resources and offspring self-rated health.Social change,gender and urban/rural household registration were found to have an’exogenous’ effect on intergenerational transmission,while socio-economic status,as an ’endogenous’ mechanism,also had a significant effect on self-rated health.Specifically,women are more likely to be influenced by intergenerational transmission from their fathers,young people are gradually moving away from the influence of intergenerational transmission from their fathers,and the influence of intergenerational transmission is weaker in urban than in rural areas;socio-economic status is the main route of intergenerational transmission,and has a greater impact on the educational attainment of offspring than on income.This paper enriches the meaning of intergenerational transmission and presents a new perspective on the study of health issues;in addition,this study provides certain references and warnings to policy makers and has certain positive implications for the sustainable development of the health China strategy. | | Keywords/Search Tags: | Health, Intergenerational transmission, Health inequalities, Socioeconomic status | PDF Full Text Request | Related items |
