Vocational skills competitions are important events sponsored or co-sponsored by governments and departments,enterprises,as well as various types of schools that organise and actively participate in them.As an important part of the vocational education system and a booster for the quality of teaching in vocational institutions,skills competitions assess the vocational abilities of secondary school students through the content of various competitions,providing a platform for skilled talents to show their exquisite skills and compete with each other.With the development of the economy and the demand for quality and excellence in vacational education,the requirements for the quality of secondary school talents training have been raised accordingly.This paper emphasizes the vocational skills competition as the background,aiming to help secondary school students improve their vocational abilities.Based on the above background,this paper takes the vocational skills competition to improve the vocational ability of secondary school students as the research theme,elaborates the theoretical and practical significance of improving vocational ability of secondary school students in the context of vocational skills competition,discusses the relevant research trends at home and abroad,under the support of expectation theory,vocational competence development stage theory,educational evaluation theory and constructivist learning theory,the influence of vocational skills competitions on vocational competence was investigated through the comprehensive use of questionnaire survey method,case study method and empirical analysis method,and analyzed the data with SPSS 26.0 software to further investigate the correlation between vocational skills competition and vocational ability of secondary school students.The main conclusions of this paper are as follows: professional competence has a significant influence on vocational competence of secondary school students,general competence has no significant influence on vocational competence of secondary school students,and psychological quality has a significant influence on vocational competence of secondary school students.According to the findings,the following countermeasures are proposed to improve the professional competence of secondary school students and strengthen their psychological quality: in terms of improving professional competence,the purpose is to improve professional knowledge and skills and clarify the training program;improve the construction of practical training bases,equip "Double-qualified Teacher" team construction and strengthen the cooperation between schools and enterprises in a three-pronged way.In terms of professional ability,we should improve the practical ability of students,open corresponding courses to enhance the professional quality and morality,and improve the career planning guidance system based on the career planning ability.In terms of strengthening psychological quality,we should help students build up their self-confidence,cultivate their resistance to stress and offer corresponding psychological quality training courses.
