The 21st century is the age of information explosion and critical thinking is attracting increasingly widespread attention as a higher order of thinking necessary for personal growth.Critical thinking is a fundamental and prerequisite for the development of innovative talent, and in the context of the new era, developing students’ critical thinking has become even more important. At present, however, the development of students’ critical thinking is mostly focused on secondary education and higher education, but there is less research on critical thinking in primary school students. The development of critical thinking is more appropriate and important in the upper primary years when students are in the transition period from figurative to abstract thinking.Thinking maps, which come in eight different types, provide a general visual language of information structure for students and are visual representations of thinking that help students to observe their thinking processes as they solve problems.A review of the literature reveals that there is little research on the development of critical thinking in upper primary school students with the aid of thinking maps, and there is a lack oaf empirical research to verify the effect of using thinking maps on students’ critical thinking.Based on this, this study relies on the information technology curriculum in primary schools to develop the construction and application of a critical thinking development model based on thinking maps for primary school students. The study uses research methods such as documentary research, survey research and quasi-experimental research to investigate the development of critical thinking in upper primary school students, using thinking maps as an aid.The details of the study are as follows.Firstly, the author clarifies the research background, research significance, research objectives, etc. On the basis of reading domestic and international literature related to mind maps and critical thinking, the status of research on mind maps and critical thinking at home and abroad is sorted out,and the relevant concepts and theoretical foundations of mind maps and critical thinking are clarified.Secondly,we investigate the current situation of critical thinking of students in upper primary school and the current situation of teachers’ critical thinking development of students in IT courses, and find that students’ critical thinking level is low at this stage, and teachers’ critical thinking teaching is not effective.Furthermore,on the basis of the survey, combined with the study of related literature,I proposed the construction objectives, principles and rationale for the construction of a critical thinking development model for primary school students based on thinking maps, and constructed a critical thinking development model for primary school students based on thinking maps under the guidance of schema theory, constructivist theory, thinking visualisation theory and information processing theory. The model consists of four main stages:problem identification and identification, activation of the thinking stage, problem reasoning and argumentation, deepening of the thinking stage, presentation of the thinking map, evaluation of the thinking stage, integration of the thinking map and reflection on the optimisation of the thinking stage. Finally,in order to verify the effectiveness of the model, this study takes the fifth grade primary school students as the object of practical research and conducts practical teaching based on the primary school information technology curriculum.Based on research tools such as questionnaires, interview outlines, classroom observation scales and student work evaluation scales, the learning effects of the students’ critical thinking development model based on thinking maps were analysed. The experimental results show that the critical thinking development model based on thinking maps for primary school students can effectively enhance students’ critical thinking disposition and critical thinking skills. The above research and related results have,to a certain extent, broadened the research ideas of thinking maps and critical thinking, and provided useful reference for teaching based on thinking maps and critical thinking development of upper primary school students.
