As an important product of the fourth industrial revolution,by virtue of promoting economic growth and challenging traditional mode of production,AI has become an important part of economic development planning and national strategies all over the world. The driving force of vigorous economic development is inseparable from foreign trade.Although Chinese total trade is huge, there are serious constraints of low ETC behind the rapid growth.Export expansion is mainly supported by low value-added primary processed finished products, lack of core technology.AI not only represents the technological revolution, but also can be applied to various industries to drive the development of overall innovation. Can the introduction of AI have a positive impact on the improvement of Chinese ETC?If there is a promotion effect, what is the way through which this influence is transmitted? This paper not only enriches the international trade theory under the background of new technology, but also provides a reference for using AI to promote the high-quality development of foreign trade.Firstly, starting from the review of relevant literature on AI and ETC,this paper determines the measurement methods, looks for the correlation between the economic impact of AI and the impact of ETC,and designs their influence mechanism for analysis;Secondly, the AI level and ETC of various provinces are calculated according to the determined calculation method, the regional differences and development trend of AI in China are described by comparative analysis method, and the spatial pattern and evolution trend of ETC in China are analyzed by kernel density estimation,it also analyzes the typical facts of the correlation between AI and ETC;Then, the model is designed, and the benchmark regression and robustness test are carried out to confirm the positive impact of AI on ETC;Finally, based on the impact model constructed in the mechanism analysis, the intermediary effect model is used to reveal the impact ways of AI on ETC,and the heterogeneity of the influence of AI on ETC is founded according to the method of region and time. The main conclusions are as follows:(1)The level of AI in China is gradually increasing.Geographically,it decreases step by step from the east to the West and from coast to inland. In terms of time characteristics, most provinces will fluctuate to a certain extent from 2011 to 2017;At the same time,Chinese ETC also shows a steady upward trend, with obvious spatial heterogeneity.Specifically, within the space, the distribution degree of Eastern, central and western provinces and the whole country shows a trend of narrowing first and then relaxing, and the relative difference is increasing;By analyzing the typical facts of the impact of AI on ETC,it is found that the correlation between them is obvious, but there may be phased differences in time characteristics.(2)The fixed effect model regression and robustness test results of AI and ETC show that AI does favourable effect in stimulating ETC,and the role of AI is more obvious in areas with high ETC,and this impact shows a certain lag.(3)The results of intermediary effect model test show that AI can improve ETC through three ways:improving total factor productivity, improving labor structure and improving innovation ability.(4)The heterogeneity test of regional characteristics shows that the regions with low AI level can better show the effect of AI in promoting the ETC because they are in the primary stage of life cycle;Time heterogeneity test proves that AI can resist the negative impact of financial crisis to a certain extent, and it is also an important driving force in the high-quality development stage of Chinese economy; In addition,a higher level of human capital can stimulate the greater role of AI in the ETC.
