In the era of global digital trade,the role of cross-border e-commerce platforms has changed from a trade intermediary in the traditional sense to an "enabler" with strong digital technology and resource integration capabilities,which provides opportunities for small and medium-sized foreign trade enterprises to improve their performance.However,not all enterprises can obtain benefits from it,and the impact mechanism of platform empowerment on the performance of small and medium-sized foreign trade enterprises is not yet clear.In view of this theoretical gap,based on the microscopic perspective of enterprises operating on the platform,this paper introduces business model innovation as an intermediary variable,and further explores the impact mechanism of platform empowerment on the performance of small and medium-sized foreign trade enterprises.Using the theories of transaction cost,value network,business model,etc.,this paper analyzes the mechanism of platform empowerment and business model innovation to promote the long-term and short-term performance of small and medium-sized foreign trade enterprises.And combined with the fact that my country’s small and medium-sized foreign trade enterprises use third-party platforms to carry out cross-border e-commerce,the combination of online and offline,online trade has become the mainstream,the trend of order fragmentation is obvious,and the transaction scale has grown rapidly,this paper constructs a theoretical model of "platform empowerment-business model innovation-performance of small and medium foreign trade enterprises",and deeply analyzes the different dimensions of business model innovation,that is,the differentiated roles of value proposition innovation,value creation innovation and value acquisition innovation in the process of platform empowerment affecting the long-term and short-term performance of enterprises.On the basis of theoretical analysis,this paper adopts the questionnaire survey method to obtain the sample data of 312 small and medium-sized foreign trade enterprises in the Yangtze River Delta and the Pearl River Delta,and uses the structural equation modeling method to test the theoretical model.The results show that:(1)Platform empowerment is an important way for small and medium foreign trade enterprises to improve their performance,and it has a significant positive impact on the long-term and short-term performance of enterprises.(2)Value acquisition innovation has played a partial intermediary role in the process of platform empowerment to improve the short-term performance of small and medium-sized foreign trade enterprises,while value proposition innovation and value creation innovation are manifested as "masking effects".(3)In the process of transforming platform empowerment into long-term competitive advantages of small and medium foreign trade enterprises,business model innovation has played a complete intermediary role,and value creation innovation has the strongest intermediary effect.The above conclusions and basic viewpoints are further verified based on the longitudinal single case study of Guangdong Bestek,a small and medium-sized foreign trade enterprise.According to the results of theoretical and empirical analysis,this paper suggests that small and medium-sized foreign trade enterprises should actively integrate into the platform ecosystem and grasp the development opportunities of platform empowerment;take advantage of platform empowerment advantages to open up new transaction channels;attach great importance to product innovation and actively promote systematic business model innovation;the government should create a good innovation environment and improve supporting fiscal and taxation policies to support small and medium foreign trade enterprises in business model innovation.
