Impact Of Cross-border E-commerce On The Transformation And Upgrading Of China’s Manufacturing Industry

As a new model of international trade,cross-border e-commerce has played an increasingly important role in stabilizing China’s foreign trade development in recent years.With the help of the Internet and trading platforms,cross-border e-commerce has compressed the traditional trading process,improved transaction efficiency,and made numerous innovations in international trade payments,logistics,and marketing.The cross-border e-commerce transaction category is mainly focused on the manufacturing industry.In the context of promoting the deep integration of the digital economy and the real economy,cross-border e-commerce brings new opportunities for the transformation and upgrading of China’s manufacturing industry.Based on a systematic review of relevant literature,this article first delves into the impact and mechanism of cross-border e-commerce on the transformation and upgrading of the manufacturing industry from a theoretical perspective,and further takes the establishment of China’s cross-border e-commerce comprehensive pilot zone as a quasi natural experiment,using relevant data from the 2010 to 2019 cross-border e-commerce comprehensive pilot zone and the multi-period double difference method to empirically test the impact of cross-border e-commerce on the transformation and upgrading of China’s manufacturing industry.The research finds that the development of cross-border e-commerce has significantly promoted the transformation and upgrading of China’s manufacturing industry,and this conclusion is still valid after robustness tests such as parallel trend test,placebo test,and replacement of explained variables;Heterogeneity analysis found that there is regional heterogeneity in the impact of cross-border e-commerce on the transformation and upgrading of the manufacturing industry,manifested as a significant positive impact of cross-border e-commerce on the transformation and upgrading of the manufacturing industry in coastal areas and areas with good digital economy development,but no significant impact on inland areas and areas with average digital economy development;Mechanism analysis found that cross-border e-commerce promotes the transformation and upgrading of the manufacturing industry through two paths: improving transaction efficiency and promoting industrial agglomeration.This article further analyzes the linkage effect of the two policies of the cross-border e-commerce comprehensive pilot zone and the free trade pilot zone,and finds that the combination of the two policies has a stronger effect on improving the transformation and upgrading level of the regional manufacturing industry.Finally,based on the research findings,propose countermeasures and suggestions to promote the transformation and upgrading of China’s manufacturing industry through cross-border e-commerce.At the government level,promote the construction and expansion of cross-border e-commerce pilot zones,fully leverage policy linkage effects,and continue to accelerate industrial agglomeration;At the enterprise level,enhance the awareness of cross-border e-commerce,introduce cross-border e-commerce talents,and actively promote digital transformation.
